This may be sexist, and I'm sorry but...

Fox News reports:

Nichols was being escorted to his retrial on rape and other charges Friday when he allegedly overpowered a court deputy, taking her gun, before killing three people: the judge presiding over his case, a court reporter and a deputy who confronted him as he escaped the courthouse.

The deputy from whom he stole the gun, Cynthia Hall, remained in critical condition Saturday.

Well, that's a helluva a price to pay for being an equal opportunity employer. Sorry for her and her family. :(

the problem isnt with her being a female, the problem is her being by herself. there is no reason to have only one escort with an inmate. there should be at least two. why? FOR SITUATIONS LIKE THIS!!! if there had been a second deputy there he could have simply shot him and he might not have had the chance to kill anyone. this could have happened with a male by himself.

guaranteed they'll have two deputies from now on.

Never a better argument for having POLICE guns on lanyards. Retractable if possible. And connected to a pin that would render it inoperable if pulled farther than the lanyard.
Or trick holsters. Gotta admit I've often wondered why more crooks don't snatch cop guns.
Other than what would happen AFTERWARDS ..... if they botched it.

But, still...............

Many bad guys in the nondominant position (cuffed or about to be) will do that when they see a single female officer. I was watching World's Wildest Police Videos and a female TX trooper pulled over a gentleman (<-- pshh, yeah, right) in a minivan. As the violations against him mounted, he then beat the female officer to near dead as she went to arrest him, all while his little 7 year old daughter was standing behind the cars a few feet away watching

I agree that a prisoner should be escorted with several guards, regardless of their gender.

Not enough officers there, period, whether male or female- makes one wonder if that gal officer was set up, or if there was a budget trim. There's still alot of sexism in law enforement. I have to deal with the offender who has "psych" problems- so easy today to say "I see Demons", and jam up the judicial system another 60-90 days for evaluations. Had one big male officer beaten badly by a meth dealer, who was in for eval. Should have had more officers. Should not be cutting corners to save money. When it comes to dealing with violent offenders, I finally traded in my heart for more brains.

It's got NOTHING to do with sex of the officer. It was an unrestrained suspect, with a history of violence and threats, being handled by only one officer. Doesn't matter if it's a guy or a girl, one on one is not the way to go in that situation.

Regarding the video of the officer who pulls over the guy in the minivan with his daughter. Poor tactics and a SUCKER PUNCH were what caused that problem. Again, not a guy or girl issue, because I've also watched cruiser cam videos of guys getting sucker punched with equally bad results.

So yes the original poster is sexist, and so are the rest that want to make this an issue of the officer's sex. This was an issue of tactical errors, not sex of the officers.

Let's see.
This guy has shot and killed 4 MALES in the past 24 hours, Pistolwhipped at least one MALE person in the garage, and was intimidating MALE jury members (according to the news articles I was speed-reading last night).
After he battered and didn't succeed in killing one FEMALE.

Nawwww, you're not sexist.

Fud

Whoops: Correction: one of the deads was the lady recorder. Sorry about the miscount.

From what I heard, the female deputy is a small person 5'1", 100 #. She should not have been alone with a 6'1", 200# violent offender who had been caught with a pair of shivs in his shoes the day before. The county blames the short staffing on budget problems.

I wonder if they considered the cost of death benefits and health care costs for the victims (and maybe lawsuits) compared to the cost of some more deputies?

A lot of mistakes were made here by all involved, but the real tragedy is yet to occur, if nothing changes as a result of this total collapse of department and courtroom strategy.

We have been shouting from the rooftops for years that this PC world we live in particular when working within LE is getting people killed and now we have witnessed first hand what a lot of people who do this for a living have been saying since the beginning.

Court rooms are no place for PC, if you are anxious that the presence of restraints on a person accused of a shocking crime will bias the jury then you need to find another jury, if you cannot find another jury then we have reached the true crisis in the system.

In Bibb County (Macon, GA) the prosecutor’s office has said time and time again they cannot seat a jury who will impartially hear a case involving any type of obstruction of an officer charge, especially if the accused is black. It was big news about 2 years ago when the judge finally declared a mistrial because nearly 300 potential jurors told the court they felt everything was now racially motivated.

Macon is majority black, about 60%
