Not really, maybe a caliber war:D

You only get to pick from the list, no addons "well I use this for that and that for this"

Better of two, in your opinion

.22 hornet or .220 swift
.243 or .257 roberts
.270 or .280
.222 or .223
9mm or 10mm
.221 fireball or .22-250
.218 bee or .219 zipper
.303 british or .303 savage
.45acp or .357 magnum

Not a contest to see which is better for what, it's what you prefer. You don't even have to say why. I just want the caliber wars to end:banghead:
Everyone has their own opinions.

Done for now, and I know I missed a lot, so feel free to add them at the bottom of the list. As for one that doesn't need to be added, mainly because there is nothing that comes close to comparison, and that is the .30-30, the uber cartridge:neener:

My personal opinions

.22 hornet or .220 swift-.22 hornet
.243 or .257 roberts-.243
.270 or .280-.270
.222 or .223-.223

.221 fireball or .22-250-.22-250
.218 bee or .219 zipper-.218
.303 british or .303 savage-.303 British
.45acp or .357 magnum-.357 Magnum

That's why I left it open to discussion, the only .30 calibers that I have any real experience with are .30-06 and .30-30. I don't care for my .30-06 because it's possessed and stays in the safe now(Remington 740, sentimental value).

And the .30-30 is the uber caliber, so there's no contest for it:)

This is just going to get ugly. You aren't going to stop the caliber wars with this, you are adding fuel to the fire by giving them another opportunity to argue their points.

Actually, it could be interesting if we were not allowing debate-- only "votes."

Alright, NO ARGUING OF ANY POINTS, accept the fact that opinions differ, you may add calibers, but you may NOT DETRACT from the effectiveness of other calibers

NO ARGUING
ninguna discusión
keine Argumentierung
변론
沒有爭論
отсутствие спорить

It's not a "what's better," but "what's more useful to ME."

With that in mind........

.22 hornet or .220 swift-----------------.220 Swift
.243 or .257 roberts---------------------.243
.270 or .280-----------------------------.270
.222 or .223-----------------------------.223
9mm or 10mm----------------------------9mm
.221 fireball or .22-250-------------------22-250
.218 bee or .219 zipper---------------no preference whatsoever
.303 british or .303 savage-----------------.303 British
.45acp or .357 magnum--------------------.45 acp

I put the 9mm against the 10mm because I was tired of seeing 9mm vs. .45acp.

I've never actually shot a 10mm, but from what I read, it's most comparable to a .40cal, which I've also never fired.

.218 bee or .219 zipper
.303 british or .303 savage
.45acp or .357 magnum

220 swift, maybe it has a flatter trahjectory, I'm not really familiar with those cartridges.
2:243, I'm guessing it's more powerful
3: 270, I'm guessing the .280 would be hard to find ammo for, I've never even heard of it.
4: .223, better ammo choices
5: 9mm, cheaper to shoot, and I'd have a better handgun caliber anyway in this scenario
6: I'm guessing the 22-250 has longer range.
7:.219 zipper just sounds better.
8: .303 british, cheap surplus ammo.
9: .45 ACP, I can shoot it from a semi-auto.

Right on, I'm just going from an internet article I read a while back, or it may have been an article in "American Rifleman". I forget where it was. Seems like the title of the article was something along the lines of, This 10mm Hunts, or similar to that. IIRC they compared the 10mm to a .40cal.

-John

Well, compared to the 9mm, 10mm Auto fires significantly heavier loads at significantly higher velocities. And the projectiles are larger in diameter. It has a significantly higher chamber pressure maximum. It requires the use of a heavier and stronger frame, barrel, and slide/bolt assembly.

To put it plainly, the 10mm Auto is in a completely different power class than the 9mm, and it is also far more expensive per round (unless you reload). It produces considerable recoil, even in the heavier guns it's usually found chambered in. This is the reason the FBI started using down loaded 10mm rounds, which used less powder and produced lower muzzle velocities. Then Smith & Wesson seized upon the opportunity, and shortened the case length due to the requirement for less powder, and voila, the .40S&W was born.

So yeah, .40S&W is comparable in muzzle energy to the 9mm, but you should compare 10mm to .357 Sig instead. Much closer, ballistics-wise (at least with lighter bullets).

.257 Roberts. It was called the most useful cartridge ever created for a reason and most of the other cartridges on the list already existed when it got that name. It's a shame it has fallen out of favor. A good bolt action in .257 Roberts would make an ideal "one gun" for a lot of people, who unfortunately have probably never heard of it.

Cartridges of the World note on the .243,"The 243 has garnered a reputation among ballisticians for erratic performance. Handloaders should keep this firmly in mind."

The .257 Roberts has a larger range of bullet weights than the .243 and pushes a larger bullet faster across all the weights where they overlap.

This is kinda silly, IMO. The comparisons offered are either personal preference between two practically identical cartridges, or apples and oranges.

Let me put an analogy to it:

.22 hornet or .220 swift,= Mazda Miata or Ferrari F-50

.243 or .257 roberts,.270 or .280; .222 or .223, .218 bee or .219 zipper, .303 british or .303 savage = Chevy Silverado 5.3l gas or Chevy Silverado 5.3l flex fuel.

9mm or 10mm = Toyota Tacoma or Dodge Ram 5500 diesel

.221 fireball or .22-250 = Mitsubishi Eclipse or Corvette C6 Z06

.45acp or .357 magnum = Dodge Durango or Chevy Trailblazer

.303 british or .303 savage
Not to whine, but the .303 savage should be compared to the .30-30, and the .303 Brit should be compared to the .30-40 Krag.

I load my .303 savage from .30-30 load data, they're so close. That and not a lot of data is out there anymore for the .303 savage. (I'm surprised it even made it on this thread, I mean it's totally obsolete!)

The Brit and Krag aren't exactly ballistic twins, but pretty darn close.

I really like the .257 Roberts (+P), too. For anything the .243 can do, the Bob does just a bit better. And yes I own both.

MachIVshooter, good analogy!

The post isn't about comparing cartridges, it's about personal preference.

I understand that some of the cartridges are close in comparison and others are so far apart it's unreal for comparison purposes.

This is for entertainment only, what your personal opinions or favorites are.

As for it being a silly post, I thought it would be a change of pace from

"Which is better, this or that"
"Show us your guns"
"______ Gun Laws, do they apply to me"
"Gun Control, another story that shows it doesn't work"
