How's it going guys. I haven't been posting as of late, but I'm gonna be around a lot more as of now.

So my buddy called me today saying he's planning on buying a gun today. All he has is a CETME, and he presented me with his decision. He said he's definitely buying either a Sig P229, or an AR-15 but he can't decide and neither can I :(

He didn't tell me what his criteria were, aside from having fun with it at the range. Just either an AR or a Sig. What do you guys think?

EDIT: I know there's a lack of criteria/information. He's really just buying on a whim. Like I said, all he owns is a CETME. No pistols, and he's asking me to help him decide on either a Sig or an AR. No criteria, nothing special he wants to do with either. All he knows he wants one of these two guns right now. Thanks guys.

Oh, and the specific type of AR he's in the market for is the Bushmaster XM15 (ES2?)

Depends on the AR. The Sig is a nice pistol.

It's sort of like asking if I should get a revolver or an X-Bolt. You're giving us one specific gun and then a general platform.

Yes, the lack of supporting criteria would seem to be a major stumbling block to answering this question. Sort of like comparing apples to oranges, or in this case, maybe a cherry to a banana.

With that being said, I'm going to go ahead and say that since he already has a long gun, maybe a pistol should be next on his really short list. So tell him to get the SIG P229.

Not enough information

Does he own a pistol yet? If not he should get a pistol (whether it's the Sig or a 1911 or Glock).

I won't be able to offer any assistance given the lack of information. There must be some characteristic(s) that will be used as the determining factor: price, purpose, quality, reliability, etc.

He needs to give this a bit more thought so we can give this a bit more thought :).

He has a rifle. A pistol always makes a nice accompaniment for a rifle. He will also have some trading stock should he want something else. At least that is
what I told myself when I started out. :D

I'm going to go against the grain and say AR. Solely for the reason that I think the more ARs that are in law abiding citizens hands, the better chance we have of avoiding a federal AWB and striking down local ones.

If he doesn't already have a handgun, then the Sig for sure. A bit hard to speculate without knowing any detail on the AR.

Added a little something more to the OP. I realize there's a huge lack of criteria but there's not much I can do about that.

If he doesn't own a pistol then does he at least know that the Sig fits him properly or is he just picking by looking at pictures? It's important that the first/only pistol someone gets fit their hand properly. Go to corneredcat.com and go over the "fitting" section with him. It would be a pity for him to spend that sort of money on a whim for a handgun that he ends up hating.

HSO: Yeah, we've fired the Sig P226 and the P229, that's how he decided which one he wanted between the two. The 226 was a little too big for his liking.

CoRoMo: It's not so much a whim as he has handled both firearms. The whim part really comes in just because he's just NOW deciding one of them since he came into a little extra money.

So what you want to know is which should he buy first.

Assuming the CETME was built by the Angry Beavers he should get a good AR first so he knows he has a reliable rifle

I'd go with the Sig since he already has a rifle and there are times one needs to be more discreet but still have protection without packing around a tree limb. By all means get an AR too but he needs to fill the handgun gap first.
