Personally I have a bias against the Remington 740 and 760. They were extremely common guns around here in the days of deer drives. They now litter the shelves of pawn shops and gun stores and they are often in deplorable condition with worn out actions, cracked wood, rusty metal, and bores that have not been cleaned since the Johnson administration. Because of that they will always have the stigma to me of being crap that people who didn’t know or care about guns bought to shoot deer in the butt with. My old man has a 7600 in 243 which is a nice little rifle, but I can’t get over my own prejudice.

the stock is a big plus

And it doesn’t match the fore arm. Judging by the finish, the original was broken off...

I was lucky to happen into two 1954 models in 30-06. Eleven hundred numbers and four months different.
One was my Grandfathers, well used but kept, the other a local score. For the same three hundred dollars I found an as new one. Fifty rounds through it. (I shot the last ten to make it fifty.)
I have a few, I love ‘em!

The Amish MachineGun! :)

I’ll bet he took the best offer, that poor old rifle. :(
How some humans treat firearms and dogs sparks my ire.:fire:

A 760 was my first '06. Very dissappointing. Poorly balanced, very heavy, unreliable feeding, awkward mag release, tight chamber. It just felt like it was built to a low price point....
You're so right about that. However, it's still a medium-length action pump with a detachable magazine, which means that in Europe (and Africa?) you can slap on a 10rd magazine, carry a couple of spare mags in your pocket, and put a serious hurt on a sounder of wild boars running by... :)

Yep. A rattle trap in need of some TLC before it feeds reliably but once it does, you're all set for quite a bit of medium to big game work in a hurry.
