I am looking for my first muzzle loader. I am presently looking at a new Thompson/ Center System1. I do not see it listed in the company's web site. Is this a discontinued model? Any info and feedback on this model specifically or Thomson/ Center in general is appreciated. Thanks.

I recently bought a very nice used TC traditional M.L. that had an unkown problem with the lock. I sent the stock to TC and they repaired the lock for free under their lifetime warranty within a few weeks. Great job and service on an older gun that I only received back 2 days ago. I've seen their traditional rifles shoot very well for others that I know. Here's a TC System One up for auction. Maybe you can ask the dealer for more information if you register and send him an email, or contact TC for model status:

Thanks for the reply. I have heard of the company's reputation on good customer service as well. I just called them this morning to inquire further about this model. They stated that the last year of maufacture was 1999 and that it uses No. 11 percussion caps but a 209 primer conversion is available for around $35. The weapon is self can be had for $150. I am seriously thinking about getting it!

Are there adavantages of one type of percussion cap over the other?

d2500ram,

$150 is a good deal on that TC. My brother owns a .50. It's a nice looker and shooter. The only time I've seen it slow or mis-fire was when he tried to use some old Pyrodex powder one time. It's never had ignition trouble using real black powder and cheapo Remington #11 caps. I've never used anything with 209's so I can't offer advice there.

From what I can tell, the "System 1" is just a model name for a discontinued T/C muzzle loading rifle. I did buy the one in question today on my lunch break! It has a 26" blued barrel with walnut stock. I still have to get some accessories for it. There is much reading and understanding of the weapon as I am not familiar with black powder weapons. I am used to revolvers and rifles so this is all new to me. I am looking forward to learning a new (old?) technology!

Thanks for the input and still welcome any comments. I have logged on to "muzzleloadingforum.com" for more input on this style of shooting and hope that this and the aforementioned forums will increase my interest in the sport!

Respectfully,
-frank.
