I've seen Thompson Contender handguns all my life and was always curious about them and kinda always wanted one. I just want some info about them before I make a plunge. Is the Encore the current/newer model? What model barrels fit on which and are they interchangeable? I'd like to have one with a 223 and 44 Mag barrel.

The Contender and Encore are totally different product lines from T/C. The Contender has a lighter frame for handling lower pressure cartridges, predominantly of handgun calibers, going up to the power of the .45-70 and .30-30. The Encore has a beefier construction for handling a pretty full range of modern, powerful rifle cartridges.

If you're ONLY interested in the .223 and .44 magnum, I would tend to endorse the Contender, simply because it would be considerably lighter and easier to tote around. However, if you envision wanting to add some heavier-kicking rifle cartridges in the future, you might want to go with the Encore instead.

I love my 1st generation Contender with 14" .22LR match barrel...

.

The Encore frame will be registered as a long gun (rifle/shotgun)
The Contender frame will be registered as a handgun ( breech loading pistol)

Due to Federal laws you can not mix and match barrel lengths. True you can go through the legal loopholes and get one frame registered as both rifle and pistol if you want to go that route. Lots of paperwork :banghead:

The barrels are NOT interchangeable. Not near my gun safe right now, but i think it is stamped on my Encore frame something like... The law forbids any barrels under 16" on Encore frames. I remember reading it either on the frame or in the papers that came with it.

Please feel free to jump in if i am wrong.

That maybe some state law in Alaska, but it is not federal law. The Encore can be fitted with pistol and rifle barrels just as the Contender or G2. The barrels for the Contender and G2 are interchangeable with the exception of the older Armor-alloy plated barrels.

G2 and standard Contender barrels are compatible.
The buttplate on my Contender carbine says, "not legal with a barrel less than 16" attached" or something close. I have both pistol and carbine stocks for that one as well as a spare 10 22lr bull barrel.
Contender and Encore barrels are not interchangeable.
Contenders handle pressures up to and including 357 maximum, the whisper series, and others but not the big rifle calibers. Contenders in 375 JDJ have taken every game animal on the planet.
There are at least three variations on the Contender frame having to do with the break open release...location of the hinge pin on the trigger guard. The oldest ones take the most effort and the latest the least.
I have had a few barrels that did not interchange without some judicious filing. Forends also may need work, especially if using an old forend on a later pistol.
I'm Contender poor: G2 Carbine with 45/70 and 50X209 barrels, Contender carbine with 223 barrel, and late model contender with (2) 22 lr barrels, 222 barrel, 357, 30-30, 45/410, 45Colt and 44mag/hotshot barrels. Thinking about a 300 whisper barrel next.

You can get a T/C encore pistol or gen 2 contender and with it change up to a rifle, BP or shotgun. That was squared awy in federal court. The contender/G2 does have a better trigger in them. and will do what you want.
