I'm with SDC on this one...looks like the old style hammer where its a PITA to switch from rim-fire to center-fire...

There are, IIRC, 3 diffrent "sub generations" of the "G-1" Contender....diffrences are in the hammer and action are the biggies...

how hard is it to break the action open?

TC scope and Duo-ring scope base on a SS barrel...

Pachmeyer decelerator grips...necessary with the meaner calibers available. :D

All in all a nice lookin' rig. :)

thanks for all the help! but does anyone know the caliber or model number? Thanks!

No way to know the caliber.

A big draw for those who like the Contender is that you can buy extra barrels in a dazzling variety of calibers, lengths, etc. and just pop them on and off.

There aren't many model numbers. Like someone said, looks like a G1.

Check out Gunbroker.com. I did a search on "TC" and had over 100 hits. I am sure something out there will match what you are looking for.

depending on the condition of the frame...you can find them from 200 at a gunshow to 250+ at a gunshop.

Barrels...factory barrels will fetch between 125-200 depending on length and caliber (some are rather rare/sought after whereas some are dogs...)

custom barrels like from Bullberry, SSK or Mike Sirois will fetch upwards of 400 dollars...more if they come with the custom dies and other specific items for that barrel/caliber.

I went through the typical "Contender-itis" a few years ago and now I have pared it down to a 17 HMR 20" and a 16.25" 45-70 with one rifle-stocked frame.

Two suggestions for calibers if you plan on getting into TC's....

If you reload...get a 30-30...30 WCF with a spitzer bullet can do amazing things on critters. :)

Second...a 44 mag....just because. :) lol I know there are bigger and badder calibers out there...but the 44 mag is just kinda....mystical. :D

Also you will always have a good investment as these things hold their value rather well...just be sure to shop around...ESPECIALLY at gunshows...there you will find the best deals, generally.

Good luck!

takes some practice...but after you get the hang of it, 150 yard shots aren't a problem...this is off hand and in the field. I know those who can take 'em longer, but I never trusted my aim past that with a hand-rifle...

bench?

Well...good bench-rest and proper technique, the right loads you can keep it MOA out to 250-300 yards with the right caliber...

my 12" 223 with my handloads would make most people with rifles worth several times what I paid for my TC look at me with "stink-eye". :D
