Really confused

I'm not skilled at reading the jargon--does it mean that if I had a T/C with a 9" barrel I could not buy an aftermarket barrel at all??

As I read it, you can buy a T/C Contender, but you can't buy the stripped frame. It must have a barrel at least 6" already on the frame, and total package must be 10.5 or more. Unless you have a weird tiny custom barrel, any T/C will meet this requirement.

However, there's some nastiness about the combo .45/410 barrels in CA, something about them being short-barreled shotguns. Until you dig up more info on that, I'd stay away from T/C shotgun barrels under 18".

Aside from the shotgun or pistol/shotgun combo barrels, and standard T/C barrel should do you fine, so long as you purchase the frame with a 6"+ barrel already in place on it.

That's just how I read it, as a former CA resident and current T/C owner.

SB 269 (Stats. 2005, ch. 683) (Dutton)

Exempts from unsafe handgun testing, as specified, single-shot pistols with a barrel length of not less than six inches and an overall length of at least 10 ½ inches when the handle, frame or receiver and barrel are assembled (PC § 12133).

This seems to be written for TC's, SSK's, etc. BTW, I am now seeing TC pistols in my local gun store, whereas, until recently they told me they weren't yet lgal. The above law is a 2006 law.

It's legal with a barrel of 6 and 1/2" plust to purchase. After that you can put most any barrel you want on it.
Some dealers were selling just frames, but CA DOJ has a notice stating they need barrels on their website.
