I have an Auto-Ordinance TM1 that I have shot about a case and a half of various .45 ACP thru in the last 6 months. Great gun, and I really appreciate the forearms I am getting from holding the beast up!

Well, I was wondering if any of you guys and gals have had any luck running hollowpoints thru your tommy's. This would not make a half bad self defense carbine, except for the weight..., if it fed hollowpoints reliably. Besides, I can't justify a HK USC with the greasegun conversion at this time...ok, well..maybe...

I don't know if it would feed HP...the round has to go pretty far to go from the magazine to the chamber, and a JHP point might get hung up.

Thompson and Carbine do not belong in the same sentence with one another. :)

What about that expanding FMJ. I think winchester makes it. Hollow copper shell w/ scores down the inside, a white rubber plug inside and a lead weight behind that. Instead of hydralic forces entering the hollow point to force it apart, the weight of the lead forces the rubber plug flat against the copper which mushrooms the jacket. Very neat if you ask me! ;)

Since when is ball ammo from a Thompson bad "self defense carbine". Seemed to work preety well for the Screaming Eagles in Normandy.

I've used the cheap winchester hollwpoints from walmart in mine (1927A1) with no problems. My first magazine is loaded with them, the rest are FMJ.

The not so cheap Cor Bon HPs also run well, but then again they do have the "filler" in them. And with the thompson weighing around 15 lbs, you dont notice they are +p. I dont think you'd notice +p+, if there is such a thing...

I havent tried the EFMJ, gold dots, or hydra-shoks.

Well, they had da switch on theirs.

UPDATE: Today I ran 100 rounds of Remington's valuepack JHPs through my thompson, these rounds sell at my local walmart for about $25 for 100 rounds.

The ammo didnt have any issues at all. It just didnt like one of my magazines, I'm thinking the spring is about wore out, since I was having the problems with 230gr ball as well (theyd go nose-up on the feed ramp, or the bolt wouldnt pick up a round at all).

The mags I used were surplus 20 rounders that pretty much look like they have been kicked around and stepped on, one has WPS stamped in the front, the other has SWCO, if anyone knows what either of them mean. IIRC they started using 30s in WWII so the magsprings might be 50 years old, lol.

After having failures with one of my 20s, I put it back in the case and tried a 30. Flawless, just as with the other 20.

I still havent tried the EFMJ, gold dots, or hydra-shoks.

I havent tried any JHPs in my drum, mainly because it requires three arms to remove it from the gun, and therefore I never use it.

Buy the "Third hand" tool from Gun Parts Corp or Kahr.
This is a device that allows MUCH easier insertion and removal of the drum.
