I've got a long overlooked Winchester 64 lever gun and quite the collection of once fired r-p brass. While reading some of Waters pet loads I found mention of AA2520 and I happen to have a pound that's going nowhere right now. I'd like to shoot Hornady 170 flat noses, any thoughts or advice? Your own loads? Thanks as always!

AA2520 is the Ball Powder equivalent of AA2495 which is Accurate Arms version of IMR4895. (although the charge weights will differ)

I've used 4895, 4064, 3031 and a few others in the 30-30 and I think my favorite powders for the task is IMR3031. Even though it won't deliver the highest velocities it's very accurate in my Carbine. I see no reason not to use AA2520 in the 30-30 and I'm sure you like the fact it meters so well...

I could not match the Remington factory 150 Gr Core-Lokt velocity from my Win 94 with Varget or IMR 4895, so I tried TAC. It will match the velocity, and shoots pretty well. I don't need match winning groups, just good enough for deer 150 yards and in. All three powders shot about the same (for me) at 100. 1" to 2" groups. I haven't tested much yet though. One group doesn't mean much. I am getting ready to load some more and try it again.

Winchester or Remington cases. CCI-200 or WLR primers. 32 to 33 grains of W-748. 170 grain Speer Hotcore Flat nose. 2,000 to 2,100 FPS from a 20 inch barrel.

Three shot spread at 100 yards from a 62 year old Winchester 94---1 5/8"

Did that quickload data get processed with non magnum primers? We'll see today if cci 200 work in this fairly small case with ball powder, I might try a few of these other powders on Friday. Thanks gentleman!

The #2520 will do well. About like the Win748 or BLC2. My preference is Reloader 15 for the 170gr bullets.

My favorite 170gr is the Remington CorLokt. The Hornady is good too, but is better if driven to highest possible velocities. (ie: 2,200fps or faster).

I've always used either Winchester LR or Fed#210 for the .30/30. It likely won't make any difference if using the CCI#250.

I've loaded the Marlin .338Express with #2520 and used both the Winchester and CCI#250 -and using Hornady 200gr FTX bullet. I can't detect any difference in pressure or velocity, but the Winchester primers (as used by Hornady in the factory ammo and their data) do give a little bit better accuracy.
