Thoughts on 22LR semi-auto options

If you don't care to build one yourself, buying the complete gun is the way to go. If you are a tinkerer and like to build your own stuff, building a 10/22 is amazingly simple. Coming up with the receiver is the issue. The first time I did it, I got the least expensive 10/22 from Walmart. I used the receiver and replaced everything else. I now have exactly what I want. I also had a box of parts. I found a receiver and rebuilt a fairly box stock gun for my wife.

I guess it is a compulsion. I have started doing it with AR-15s now as well.

I wouldn't bid much higher on that rifle. It's already going to be REALLY heavy, then you're gonna add probably close to a pound to the muzzle.

I built the one above for about $900 and it has all the best parts in an aftermarket receiver with better machining, better finish and a better mount than the Ruger receiver. It has an accurized bolt set for minimum headspace, aftermarket bolt handle, $300 KIDD two stage trigger, Boyd's stock and Clark mid-weight barrel.

I love my Marlins and I have never even considered buying a 10/22 but I will say that even though you may have to do some work to a 10/22 to make them drive nails, the one area that is easily remedied is the trigger. Even a worked Marlin semi-auto trigger can never be considered great. There was a guy making an expensive trigger replacement that increased mechanical advantage, drastically lightening trigger pull but I don't even know if those triggers are still available.

I would think $900 will buy you enough 10/22 parts to shoot groups in the teens at 50 yards with top tier ammo.

If accuracy is your primary goal then buy a 10-22 and throw away everything but the bare receiver and build your own. If you want to have fun with the .22 get a S&W 15-22, you will spend less money and have lots more fun. My DPMS .22 is great also but about the same as a new AR rifle in price.

I'm a big 10-22 fan ... I have 6 of them all in different configurations and all have the Vortquzen target hammer kit in them, it gives a really nice smooth & light trigger pull ... Not pictured is a 2013 model with the laminated salt & pepper Manlicher stock. I'm still looking for a black take-down with the factory threaded barrel.

I built the top 2, the top one almost 20 years ago, the 2nd one down is my favorite, it's lighter, and has a threaded barrel.

That being said, my favorite, right out of the box is my SiG-522 Pistol/SBR'd
