Thoughts on a 44

I just picked up my 44 Bulldog. The timing is perfect. Lockup is very tight. No endshake. Mines a keeper. Cooldill got a bad apple. Sorry.

That's odd. My 629MG (same overall size/weight) is only an ounce heavier than my USFA 4¾" .44Spl. That fixed sight gun you pictured wouldn't be more than an ounce lighter.

O
An N-frame .44Spl is "puny"???

I don't know how much your Mountain Gun weighs, but I was referring to a full size 24. Before I sold it I weighed it on my shipping scales. I don't remember exactly what it weighed but it was north of 40 oz. Compare this to the 36 ounces of the above revolver thats a good 1/4 lb. difference.

44s among other things.

I have a few 44s..Most are S&Ws..but I have a Ruger Flattop in 44 sp. and it is a fun gun to shoot and you can load it a bit hotter too. I also have a couple of first generation Charter Arms Target Bull Dogs. Yep they are light and have a bit of recoil because of the light frame. But they are easy to carry (I use a crossdraw) only have five shots..but you can make 'em shoot where you look. A 200 gr HP at 750 FPS is just fine or a 200-240 gr SWC works too. I happened to buy 2 and have only shot one. The other is still new in the box. I just couldn't bring myself to shoot it..Neat serial number. Been thinkin about putting it on Gun Broker...but..I might just need it. LOL:D

by being careful I think he means before you buy the gun, check the cylinder's timing and end shake.... as well as a few other checks.
Yes that's exactly what I mean.

Mine was out of time enough to were I'm sure it would have spat and reduced accuracy. Just something to look out for, and to check for in a store before you lay down your monies.

My vote is for the S&W Model 29. Same gun Dirty Harry used. Very smooth, reliable, and accurate. My other top pick would be the Colt Anaconda. If there is one thing that I have learned it is that, with rare exception, S&W and Colt make the best revolvers.

The only difference between a 4" model 24 and the 629MG is that the 629's cylinder is slightly longer. The only difference between the 629MG and the model 21 you pictured is the sights. Mine weighs 40oz and the model 21 you pictured is listed by S&W at 39oz. My 6½" model 24 is only 42oz. Barrel contours are the same for all of them. They're all very similar in weight.

Hmm... Jeff Quinn in his review/test of the Model 21 listed it at "36.6 ounces unloaded." Too, the 21 doesn't appear to have the huge target grips of the 24/29/629. Maybe that's the difference.

Bottom line for me was the Model 24 I owned felt large and ungainly. If you or anyone else like them, I fully support you.

I like the 4" 629 as an all around woods gun. you can load it with specials for defense against sub humans or load it with magnums for nature's critters. you can also play anywhere in between. the balance is good but for regular magnum shooting a 6" bbl is my preference.

4" Tracker 44 Mag.

Took the tracker to the range yesterday. I put it through its paces alongside my Ruger Flat top. It did quite well, although I plan on doing a trigger jog. Comparing it to my Flat top Bisely probably isn't quite fair, but it held its own. Trigger aside it ran well. I fired 44 +P and it held decent groups. When I say +P, were talking 240 XTP at 1100 fps (18 grs 296, CCI 350) It probably will never compete with the Bisely for accuracy, but a trigger job should cut the groups from 2 1/2" to 1" at 10 yds.
