Has anyone wondered why it seems like most countries settled on around 0.30" for their modern rifle when smokeless powder became commonly used?

The vast majority use .30, .303, .311 7.62, 7.65, 7.35mm and similar which all come out very close in size.

I am wondering if there is a magic size that is best for all purposes or if there is a manufacturing reason, perhaps. Maybe machine tools come in standard sizes that makes drilling a .30 hole easier than specifying another size.

In the traditional handguns it comes down to .32 .36 and .45, pretty much.

What do you think?
