Saw this on History channel a while back, while it might be totally hypothetical I think that it as a really good grain of truth in it. There are tons of SHTF threads on this board, and I feel that most of them devolve into these abstract threads about what/which gun etc.. In light of this info presented in the history channel doc I feel that choice of armament etc, is somewhat secondary. It seems to me that while being armed is very important it would be more important having enough water and a good amount of anti-depressants would be more beneficial. I doubt that most of us would be able to handle the immense psychological pressures of such a horrible disaster

Ok, here's the link

Also, a great "Documentary" to watch about a similar topic is Peter Watkins's The War Game. It was made in the mid 60's and is based on leaked British Govt. documents outlining what the scenario would be if there was a nuclear attack. According to the film, a large part of the population would be rendered useless, unable to deal with the mental pressures.

Thanks for lending and ear, and I look forward to hearing what you guys have to say!

It's not as exciting to talk about stockpiling food, water and medicine. Kind of like how some people want to have the same conversation over and over about how to defend against terrorist attacks even though they are overweight, haven't gotten their cholesterol checked in years and don't wear their seat belts when they drive.

Mindset, Skillset, Toolset in that order. Most here want to talk about the toolset. I talk w/ our SWAT guys at work, it really doesnt matter what gun they have, of course they have their favorites, but in a SHTF scenario the best gun to have is the one in your hand...

The "Mindset, skillset, toolset" mantra makes a lot of sense.

I'm a big believer that you are more likely to survive a negative situation if you've thought about it before, and part of your thought process is how you might react to difference scenarios that may happen. It just makes sense to me.

Military, police, fire all train for various scenarios, and when they are presented with certain events, they don't have to think it through, and then act, they can just act. This works for everyone, just like teaching a new driver how to react if a dog or cat runs out in front of them when there is oncoming traffic.

I've heard the statistic that of people that have been victims of attempted violence, the folks that have been through defensive training (prior to the attack) have a faster emotional and mental recovery time (than those who have not). It would seem logical that discussing these scenarios might help one be better mentally prepared if such a scenario should happen.

it was good, and I liked it right until the guy threw down the gun he'd just used.Idiot.Even empty, that gun would have been excellent barter, for food / shelter for his family.I ALMOST stopped watching right then.

SHTF/TEOTWATKI threads

We don't do those here. Zombies either.

Folks, PLEASE read the rules before posting here. Yes, there are lots of them to keep up with. I'll get them into more manageable form eventually, but I need other staff to help with that and... that takes a while. Meanwhile, start at http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=503303 at the top of the page and work down.

If I have to start whacking knuckles with a ruler to get attention, I will- but I'd rather not.
