Thoughts on Sig P226 Elite Combat Night Sights

After a bunch of research and trying a few guns out I bought a Sig P226 Elite Dark today. It was a bit above my price range but will be one of the few guns I'll probably buy so I paid a bit more than originally planned. Now begins the three day waiting period.

The question I've got is about the combat night sights. They really seem large on top of the gun compared to the other sigs I've been looking at. After looking around on the net a bit I found a post about concerns about these larger sights moving around more than usual and the need to reset them quite a bit. That sounds like a real pain to me. I'm not going to be shooting all the time and I'm not one who would immediately notice the sights are off over time. I'm not that great an aim so it's not like I'll be hitting bull's eyes all the time and then suddenly get worse and know it's the sights.

Is this a real concern and will these sights require constant monitoring? I won't be wearing this as a carry and it will most times sit in a small holster in a safe. Will the holster be more apt to snag on these sights? I'm leaning towards the sig poly holster or some similar type. I guess this shouldn't be a problem since the rear sights sit outside the holster.

I just want to get this figured out before I carry the thing out of the store. I'll be stopping by there to discuss it and hold the thing again. Just wanted to get this forum's opinion.

You may have an issue with holster snagging the site and it will now be part of your holster shopping process. That's all.

LOL, I feel your pain! Whenever sights move around on me, I just assume I'm having a bad day at the range (my old flinch has come back, or bad trigger control, or my grip has gotten non-neutral, or whatever). It's usually only after I get home that it occurs to me to check the sights. Same thing happens to me playing golf... I'll realize in the car on the way home how to stop hooking the ball. Too late, jackass!

Anyway, no help for you on your actual question. Your observation just resonated with me, so I figured I'd flap my gums a bit.

I went to the shop again today and looked at the gun during my 3 day wait. The adjustment is only elevation as the while thing rests in a U shaped holder that won't allow side-to-side movement. So there's not much movement that can happen. Once again I was reminded how much I like the overall feel of the gun and the upgraded grips. If the sights bother me down the road I'll just switch them out.

I can't remember who makes these sights for SIG, but I don't think they'll need constant monitoring unless you're bumping them into things alot...assuming they aren't made by Tru-Glo.

Having said that, I have to agree they they do stick up a lot. In the catalog picture, you'll notice that the front blade is actually floating above the top of the slide. Both the front and rear sights look like they are a snag waiting to happen. Unfortunately, it is pretty hard to get a non-snag rear sight on a SIG due to the domed top of their slides.

I hated it so much that I had a pistol smith bury the body of a non-snag rear sight in the slide:

Yes, the sights are large. But unless you plan to carry the gun much of the time--in which case it will get banged around a good bit in normal use--I wouldn't worry about the sights moving around. I've adjusted the sights on SIGs with a sight pusher and, believe me, they're in the dovetail tight. Much tighter than the sights on Glocks and I've never had Glock sights to move from carrying and knocking around either.

The only problem I forsee might be finding a holster that doesn't snag them on the draw or when reholstering. If it's only going to be used as a range gun, you can work around the holster thing anyway.
