I thought I would turn this question over to the THR cognescenti (or however you spell it). Do you think it is worth paying a gunsmith to improve the trigger on an XD- lessen overtravel, improve trigger reset, etc.? Thank you for any opinions.

I have pulled two that were worked, one was at the Springfield Custom Shop, the other was from Rich Dettlehouser at Canyon Creek. Both were very nice, but the one from Canyon was incredible. His triggers have to be tried to be believed. Better than all but a few of the high end 1911 triggers I have tried, seriously.

I wouldn't send it to just anyone for work, I would send it to Springfield or more likely Canyon Creek.

I'm happy with my XD45's stock trigger. The reset is noticeably longer than a Glock, but by the time I'm confident that I'm back on target my trigger finger has already made up for the difference and is ready to fire again.

If it was truly necessary, I believe I could mag-dump an XD about as quick as I could a Glock. Until my skill goes beyond the gun I'm not overly worried about it.

Rm,
If i may ask how many rds does your xd have through it? Mine was sweet from the factory, but after the 500rd and the 2000rd mark, i felt a change in the trigger and right now it is perfect and, i know exactly what it is gonna do and when. If your gun dosen't have, i would say at least 2000-2500 rds through it i would wait on getting a smith to do it. Then that way if the trigger gets better on it's on then you won't have to spend the money to get a trigger job. Mine evened out greatly, i hope yours does as well, and good luck, let us know what you decide!

I had Canyon Creek do a 2.5 lb trigger job on my XD9. What a difference! Highly recommend. I saw my USPSA scores go up right after I had it done.

Canyon Creek

Had the opportunity to try a Glock 35 that had a custom shop's treatment on its trigger. The XD with Canyon Creek's magic is better.

I figure that my XD with CC's fusion finish, adjustable sight and fiber optic front sight and trigger job is the best choice I could have made for IDPA's ESP class and Production class in IPSC. It really performs well for Steel Challenge shooting too.

I prefer 1911's and my XD is now as close to feeling like a 1911 as a polymer pistol has become.

If you want to put more money into your XD, Canyon Creek is the best choice.

I sent my XD into Springer Precision (www.springerprecision.com) for a trigger job and I am a firm believer! The difference is unreal.
Turn time for the job was lightning - dropped off at UPS Tuesday night returned to my door Friday!

Long story short get the work done - it will make a noticable difference.

Thanks, Gentlemen, for your replies. My XD-40 tactical is nearly new, so I may take possum's advice and wait 2000 rounds. However, I am interested in reading any other comments that people want to post.

For competetion a 2-2 1/2lb trigger is fine but i believe that that trigger pull, is pretty light and should be proceeded with caution. It might be a great thing to have done but in a carry gun it could be a liability issue!

domfort,
welcome to THR, and thanks for that link, i went to the website and am very impressed, with the whole shebang, videos, reviews and prices. i have just been sold on that company. i can't wait to see what he can do with my xd. if it can get any better than what it already is i will be amazed! but i am sure they can work some magic there!:)

I made the mistake of haveing the trigger on my XD45 Tactical lightend after only a few hundered round's. My gunsmith did an excelent job, but as the pistol wore in I felt that it was a little light for me. Kinda touchy in fact & made me a little jumpy. I'm haveing him tweek on it a little this week to get it back to 4lbs, as I think that 4lbs feels best to me for the XD. It has over 4000 round's through it now & I doubt if I'll ever get rid of it. I also quit counting at 4000. I don't really know why I do that anyway! :)

What are you doing with the gun?

My XD's trigger is factory stock and just fine for the shooting I do with it. If I need a 1911 or revolver trigger, I'll shoot a 1911 or revolver. Seriously. Like my friend Ala Dan says, they get better with age. If it's just flat out a bad trigger, I would have it worked but they are not bad triggers. I have shot many DA/SA pistols with worse triggers and most all DAO triggers are worse, except the LDA's. :)
