THR members in Western AR and Eastern OK--fun gun things to do

I have been a member of the Old Fort Gun Club in Fort Smith for only about six months now.

And I must say, I think it's great and underused.




At their meetings, they keep hammering about getting new folks involved, and have planned and offered free events for youngsters, etc.

And all their organized competitions are OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC. Typcally, the OFGC members pay one fee to compete at the events with the nonmembers paying two or three or maybe five bucks more.....All funds go back to the actual event itself (buys cases of clay targets, for example,) or improving and developing the club and facilities and putting on youth shooting programs.

There have to be some THR folks who might like to know what's going on at OFGC.

Here's what to look for:


Cowboy Action shoots (Think three-gun with Old West style firearms): First Saturday of every month. 10:00 am start in cold months, 9:00 am start in hot months.

Sporting Clays(I saw folks with H&R Topper single shots at this event, come on out!) . Second Saturday of every month at 9:00 am at Alma, AR, range.

NRA Highpower competitions (military style service rifles) : Third Saturday of every month, 8:00 am.

Small bore silhouette: Second and 4th Saturday of every month, 9:00 am.

IPSC (Practical Pistol) every third Saturday except in Octoboer, 9:00 am.

Three-Gun matches, as scheduled. You must attend a training class for this one before they let you on the line. And the last training class for 2004 is Oct. 2.

Cowboy Lever Rifle silhouette combined with NRA Hunter Silhouette, Fourth Sunday of every month, 1:00 pm.

THus far, I have done the NRA Highpower (yesterday, in fact) and Sporting Clays.

I intend to try every single thing on the list at least once.

Again, OFGC events are open to the public. No charge at all to come out and watch.

Oh yeah, one more thing. During the week, when competitions are NOT being held, here's the visitation policy.

All non-members must be accompanied by a member. Non-members who live 50 miles or closer get one free range visit. Then, they have to join.

Non-members who live more than 50 miles away get unlimited visits.

I just moved from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Southern Utah about three weeks ago and I already miss the Old Fort Gun Club. They have really made a lot of improvements recently like adding several pistol ranges and shooting benches. They also do an excellent job of keeping it clean and well-maintained. I would also highly recommend the OFGC to shooters in Western Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma.

Like I said in our e-mail, hillbilly, Im tied up for a couple more weeks, but I do want to check out the club hopefully in early September. Would love to come shoot clays or three gun.

Been too many years since I lived up that way. Red Barn still serving steaks ?
Sporting Clays , humm...and I live > 50 mi away, unlimted visits you say?

Yes, Red Barn still serves steaks, but I haven't been there in years.

Sporting Clays and all weekend events at OFGC are open to the public.

There is no membership requirement to participate in the weekend events....the ones which I have posted along with their schedules.

The "Free Visit" applies to use of the actual gun club ranges themselves during the week when schedule events are not taking place.

I am in the same boat as SM, its a wee bit far to travel. But I do wonder if I can shoot clays with an 18" barrel... Lord knows I cant hit a moving barn though. Only the stationary ones.
