I know more than a few of you have kids in college. Now is the time to write a note to their schools' presidents (or whatever title they're using...), and ask them if they've got a plan in place to deal with someone going nutjob at the school - and at the same time, suggest that they allow people who have gun permits (do not use terms like "concealed carry" or "CCW") to be able to have their guns on campus.

I imagine most or all colleges and lower level schools are doing at least a cursory examination on their 'emergency plans'.

Frankly I have no confidence in their ability to protect anyone.

I have done and still do teach my girls everything I can regarding self-defense.
One is in college.

Unfortunately state law in Florida prohibits carrying a firearm on any school property, including colleges.

Something we are working on.

I am currently a college student with a CCW. From now on I carry at school regardless of the school policy banning guns on campus. Note I said it was a school policy. The State Attourney General says that the State's gun ban at schools is only for K-12 and does not apply to college campuses. The worst the college can do is discipline me, and quite frankly I would rather be disciplined by the school then dead in a classroom.

Even if the State says I can't carry on campus I'm going to. From now on I carry everywhere that does not prevent me from carrying by having metal detectors or searches at the doors. I refuse to be a victim and refuse to allow my wife and soon child(ren) to be victims, no matter what policy says. If I can't carry because of disarmament searches I won't go.

tmajors...bad move. The penalty you will face is not worth the advantage you will gain. I urge you to think about it. Please note, I do not disagree with your sentiment and/or position, but if caught, as far as the school and authorities are concerned (media too) then you are the perp waiting for an opportunity. Goofy - but that is how it will come down! Think about it.

I'd beg to differ.

We need to take back our environment, and common sense says that we should be capable of self defense.

I see this as righteous civil disobedience, in the vein of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King.

Hokk. I'm aware of the penalty in my state. Currently it is a misdemeanor if it's determined I was not allowed to carry by law in a certain area, and you get your gun back once you pay the paltry fine.

I should explain that I already have carried on campus, lots of times, I just haven't carried 100% of the time.

As far as the school itself goes there is precidence(sp) already set last year when a student OPEN carried on campus legally. School couldn't do anything about it except tell him to take his gun off campus as it was against school policy. Same student now concealed carries on campus.

Each state is different of course, mine is pretty gun friendly. I wouldn't say the same thing if I lived in the Cali for example...course by choice I avoid California like the plague anyways.

The argument about "being a perp waiting for an opportunity" is bogus. Same thing can be said about everyone who concealed carries and the few people that open carry.

Unfortunately, carrying a firearm into a building on a college campus is a felony under Texas law, even with a CHL.

CCW people are not the problem!

It can be argued that those with a CCW permit are less likely than the general populace to "go nutjob." After all, they've been vetted by the state issuing the permit, and passed a CC class and been certified. And, because they have a "special standing" to lose, they will be MORE law-abiding than the general populace, not less so.

I wish to God there'd been a CCW at VT. I wish there'd been one earlier when a guy went nutjob @ a church service and started killing the worshippers, in WI. I wish there'd been one at Columbine HS. I wish there'd been one on the airplanes on Sept. 11! (Even Jay Leno joked that there should have been armed passengers then--stand up with a box cutter and have 6 or 8 .44 magnums pointed at you, would deter anybody!)

But if wishes were horses.... All we can do is try to not lose any rights in the hysteria storm sure to come from this latest nutjob case, and then work to gain CCW's in those areas where they aren't as yet. And keep the faith. And continue to train for what we hope will never happen.

I'll stop. I'm ranting.

I agree with tmajors. The policy will not change without direct confrontation, be that in board meetings, local papers, etc.

At my old U, it was accepted that CC happened on campus. If a staff was to see it, they were required to forward it up to their superiors or face punishment. Usually, they'd ask you to put it in your car and come back. Since students knew staff was risking their careers by this, they were always compliant. But if no staff noticed, then concealed was as concealed did.:neener:

Now, as a civilian, I attend a college on a military base. I'm pretty sure the school discourages carry but not sure if it's forbidden. However, I'm not sure I wanna be caught carrying an undeclared weapon (there is no gate guard) on a military base. Not sure who's jurisdiction I'd fall under, though I assume it'd be whichever is harsher.:uhoh:
