For all who have stitched their own or repaired heavy canvas/ cordura/ etc military packs, etc:
what kind of thread did you use?

I am looking for thread adequate for the load-bearing parts of the stuff- specifically the shoulder straps.

Any other tips and equipment I may find helpful in hand-sewing this stuff?
thanks,

Never did it myself but it looks like some type of nylon/blend.

By hand  good luck, hope that you have a heavy piece of leather to cover your palm to shove that needle through.

Spiderwire fishing line works good. Get a big ol sharp sail needle unless you like breaking needles.

steel wire. use a small awl with a hole in the business end. pick em up at leather stores. they have a wooden handle

I have used a small tool consisting of a wooden handle attached to a large needle with the thread fed through the tip and from a spindle in the handle. I used this for replacing a window in a convertible top. You punch it through and run the tread through the loop. It works well and looks semi professional. Lets see if I can find a link...here we go

edited: yep its called an awl, so what willyjixx said.

Another vote for the awl and waxed thread. Did you know that that tool has been sold in exactly the same configuration, and exactly the same box for over 40 years? Amazing--try to think of another commercial product that hasn't changed in 40 years and still sells because it works.

The thread I use is Quilting thread that I wax with beeswax. You could also use braided fly fishing line.

the above mentioned awl works or a curved upholstry needle and pliers.

Thnks

Thanks to all!
Gotta love thr.
I'll try to post a pic of the thing when its done.
