I have an 18" bull barrel and was thinking of having it threaded to take a compensator etc. My gunsmith says it won't effect accuracy. He will not effect the crown. What do you guys think? I would hate to ruin a good barrel. It's a DPMS heavy bull.

Agree, when something works, don't screw with it! Adding a compensator to a .223 (5.56) rifle will not get you anything. Waste of time and money.

unless by compensator he means suppressor. less noise is always nice.

Would there be any reason to not refresh the crown while it is in the lathe?

+1 to if its not for a suppressor, a waste of time and money.

If the crown is proven good, no upside to messing with it if its possible to leave it as is.

Threading for a suppressor, getting the threads concentric and parallel with the bore is the main issue.

Whether adding a compensator is worth it or not depends on the use of the rifle. While the recoil of a .223 AR isn't obnoxious, it is there and there is muzzle climb. A compensator can almost completely eliminate the climb and reduce the recoil even further. The result is the sights barely moving on the target making a very rapid follow-up shot or shots much quicker. Where does it matter? 3-gun and IMO coyote hunting. For a range plinker, I wouldn't bother. I wouldn't thread a 20"+ bull barrel for a suppressor either.

Simply threading a barrel should not affect the crown if done properly.
Now THAT I can agree with. If you want to thread your bbl that's your business. I had a 20" post-ban threaded and it got messed up-threads weren't concentric to bore. I sent it to YHM and got them to re-do it. Lost an inch and wound up with a 19" bbl. So just make sure the guy know's what he's doing.
