I've looked for a local gunsmith to thread the barrel of my AR15 (An XM15, apparently Bushmaster doesn't thread the barrel) without luck.

I'm pretty mechanically able. I don't have a lathe though. What is needed to thread a barrel, DIY?

At minimum, a die and some oil.

Most probably a lathe, a die and some oil.

Sorry.

What is the OD of the barrel now, and what threads are you looking for?

If you don't want to shoot the flash suppressor off the muzzle, a die, a lathe, and some good cutting fluid.
If you are using a standard flash suppressor then the common thread is 1/2"X28.
If you muzzle isn't turned to .500" diameter then that needs to be done too and the lathe is most needed here.

If you live in a state that doesn't allow removable suppressors and threaded muzzles you are probably asking for trouble,,,,,,

We do a lot of AR barrels (and every other type of barrel) here. For any type of muzzle attachment (brake, silencer, etc) it is important that the threads are cut concentric and inline with the bore. If you use a die you're likely going to be a bit misaligned. We set the barrel on centers and cut with a single point on a lathe

If you're willing to buy a lathe you can do it yourself. My brother had a lathe that we did a lot of cool stuff with including rethreading barrels we had cut down (from 16" to 14.7").

It would certainly be cheaper to have someone else do it, or even sell the barrel altogether and get a new one though.
