Man opened fire with shotgun at Odenton party, police say

Three people were wounded and another was hit by a car while fleeing when a man removed from a wedding anniversary party returned with a shotgun and opened fire late Saturday at the Odenton Volunteer Fire Co. hall, authorities said. The alleged gunman was in critical condition after crashing his car into a tree, and three private security guards who had been hired to work at the party were arrested - two of them on weapons charges, the other for possession of marijuana, Anne Arundel County police said yesterday.
Police said they received a call about 11 p.m. reporting a shooting at the fire department hall in the 1400 block of Annapolis Road. The social hall had been rented for the anniversary party, from which the security officers removed a man for an unknown reason.
The man returned a short time later with a shotgun, wounding three people as several other guests fled, police said.
Delvin Delonta Eldridge, 19, of Baltimore was shot in the torso and was in serious condition yesterday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Eric Clayton Cleveland, 39, of Takoma Park was released from Shock Trauma after treatment for wounds to the torso and extremities, and Sharde April Smith, 18, of Annapolis was treated for a wound to a hand or arm and released from Laurel Regional Hospital, according to police.
Erica Lynn Williams, 19, of Annapolis ran onto Annapolis Road, where she was struck by a vehicle, police said. She was in critical condition at Shock Trauma, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
The assailant fled in a Chrysler Concord that crashed into a utility pole on Telegraph Road near Pine Avenue in Odenton and suffered multiple injuries, police said, adding that a shotgun and ammunition were recovered.
Terrance Carlester Medley, 25, of Davidsonville, who was reported in critical condition after being flown to Shock Trauma, was charged with three counts each of attempted second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, four counts of reckless endangerment, possession of a deadly weapon and possession of a deadly weapon with intent to injure.
The three private security officers were identified by police as Edward Lee Weary, 38, of Upper Marlboro, who was charged with possession of a deadly weapon and two counts of possession of a concealed weapon; Edward W. Coles Jr. of Oxon Hill, charged with possession of a concealed weapon; and James M. Marshall of Suitland, charged with possession of marijuana.
Robert Rose, president of the Odenton Volunteer Fire Co., said it regularly rents the hall to church groups and community members at rates starting at $600. Saturday's shooting wasn't the first he said, noting that one had occurred there in the early 1980s.
"Over the years, we've had maybe a fight or fisticuffs," he said. "Last night was very out of the ordinary for us."
He would not identify the woman who rented the hall, saying he was advised she might be called as a witness to the shooting.
He also said fire company officials will discuss their policy and procedures for renting the hall at a meeting tomorrow.
"We're very concerned, not only for damage that was caused, but the injuries to the people and for our reputation," Rose said.
A window and tempered-glass door were shattered during the shooting. Rose estimates the cost of the door at $1,000, but didn't know how much it will cost to replace the window. He said the fire company will keep the party's deposit and likely will try to recover additional costs as well.
