Thrilled with altamont

I love Altamont grips, but only their "superwood" varieties. The "super" wood is actually a plasticized thin-sheet plywood which is extremely durable, and "finished" all the way through. So, there is no finish coating that can wear off over time, and it won't warp like normal wood. I have a similar pair of grips on my Model 642, minus the fleur de lis. Pictured here with my NAA 22 Short. I think NAA also sources their OEM grips from Altamont.

Altamont's real wood is a different matter, I would avoid those! It's a bit ironic because you would think natural wood is better, but I tried several times to get a pair of Altamont walnut grips for my Model 29, and both had a poor fit. Specifically, big gaps along the joining seam, as well as big blond spots in the wood. It was not quality walnut, and it looked the part. The "super" wood laminates, on the other hand, are more consistent.

Well I took the Altamonts out for the first range outing and gun shoots great! But the stocks “bite” the webbing in my hand I think from the left grip panel at the top. There are just too many 90 degree sharp edges on these grips. A quick sanding would fix it but then you mess up the stain.. I don’t want to modify them. It’s a defensive carry piece. If you had to use it this “bite” would be the least of your problems!! Overall very please though

I hate to say this but I think I might sell these stocks! They just don’t have the grip/sticky ness I need. When I do pocket holster presentation drills I can’t get a consistent purchase. Maybe it’s just the two finger boot grip. I don’t know. Im going to put the stock panels back on and retest

That is one problem with Altamonts. They have sharp edges in spots. You can sand those areas to round them off then apply Min Wax Tung oil to the area. I have done it and you can't tell they were modified

I do have some Tung oil. I hate to sand on such pretty stocks. Factory rubbers are on right now and it’s a 70%+ improvement on presentation-purchase from the pocket. I’m going to work on the Altamonts. Stay tuned. Thanks for all the help
