I am attempting to build a Fusion kit and I am having a problem with the safeties. The Thumb safety functions properly but is very stiff in both the on and off positions. I think it just needs a little more taken off to loosen the “on” position but what is making it so stiff in the “off” position? Doesn’t the safety only contact the frame in this position? Without the hammer in place it moves freely thru the full range.
My second question is regarding the grip safety, with the thumb safety in the half way position the grip safety pivots freely but when I place the thumb safety either on or off position the grip safety binds on the right side of the frame. At first I removed some metal from the right of the grip safety but it still binds and there is a gap opening between the left frame and the safety. Other than acting to pin the grip safety to the frame how does the thumb safety interact with the grip safety? Am I overlooking something obvious?

Tuner--Paging 1911 Tuner---!!!!

Since it's a Fusion product I won't personally comment other than that sounds like something isn't made properly IE: the grips safety or the frame isn't properly milled.

This shouldn't occur...

Many people love Fusion stuff so I won't dog it.. Odds are the Frame is probably made by STI and they make good stuff.. So I'm guessing the Grip Safety is the problem.

Call Bob Serva he'll more than likely give you some pointers.

He's the reason I got in the 1911 parts business.---That's not a positive comment by the way!

Not sure how you went about fitting your thumb safety. From your descrition so far, I can think of a couple things that might be causing problems. See this thread for instructions. Specifically post # 4. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=379485&highlight=safety

Once you've digested that, come back with some more details. Maybe we can figure it out.

Another thing I did not mention is that this is an ambi-safety. This is what I did while fitting the thumb safety, condensed version.
Covered back of shield with blue sharpie, inserted thumb safety (TS) into frame only and check fit. Stoned and polished any high/rough spots. Safety moved thru full range easily, (both right and left sides).
Installed disconnector/sear/sear spring and MSH. Inserted TS, observed how much metal would need to be removed. Filed TS until would engage/block sear, (numerous tries, sharpie, check, remove more), continued until had full movement of TS from “off” to “on”. IN the halfway position it slips easily into the frame but the safety is very stiff in both positions. I assume that I still need to remove more metal to loosen the “on” position but I am questioning this because it is equally stiff in the “off” position. I also slightly opened the slot/groove beneath the shield that engages the frame in an attempt to loosen the safety.
After I had a functional TS I installed the grip safety. With the TS in the halfway/loose position the grip safety fits fine but when I push the TS into the “on” or “off” position the grip safety binds on the right at the end near the MSH
