I'm going to upgrade the stock on my Savage 93R17 from the plain jane hardwood to a laminated one. I called Savage today and I can get a standard stock for $153 and a thumbhole for $190. I really don't like the looks of the thumbhole but I could warm up to it if the comfort and ergonomics are that much better. So for those of you who have used a thumbhole would it be worth the extra 37 bucks?

Kurt

I have never fired a thumbhole-equipped firearm, but I love how they feel. Almost like it becomes part of you. I held a 93r17, in SS, with the thumbhole stock, and I dare not tell my 917V, but I actually liked how she felt-a lot. I'm so ashamed... Seriously, though, you should go down to a sporting goods store, or gunstore, and ask to hold a thumbholed 93r17, since it will feel pretty close to the way you want yours.

A thumbhole stock does feel good.

It would make a lot of sense on a gun that's NOT a bolt-action...

Well, you like some rather peculiar guns yourself, Rocky.

I'm just saying, assuming you like the stock in the first place, they'd make sense on some guns. NOT on a bolt action that requires you to use your trigger hand to cycle.:)

well i dont have any thumb hole expierence with the 93 but i do love my savage 93 alot though

Thumbhole = much better IMO

Had a stock 1022. Changed out for thumbhole, it's much easier to keep stable during off-hand shooting. It's also nice to use when hiking (aka use thumb hole to hold the weapon securly). Oh yeah, and the anti's hate thumbholes (too much like a pistol grip)

Honestly, I can't think of a bad thing about thumbhole stocks.. but thats just my experience.

I`ve just found a very nice laminate thumbhole stock for my Ruger M77 on ebay for $83.00 new. Yes buy it because it helps tremendously with long range shooting and they feel excellent.

I find that its easier for me to pull the trigger more smoothly with a thumbhole. I dont have one on my 10 22 but a buddy has one and I really liked it.

Well that right there is enough of a reason for me :D

Part of me is leaning towards the standard stock because it just looks more like a rifle should and I think I can only get this stock in grey as is my preference. The other part of me likes the idea of the more ergonomic pistol grip. Another plus for the Thumbhole is an additional swivel stud for a bipod. The $37 probably doesn't make much difference to me at this point, I just need to decide which one I want. Arghhhhhh......

It is a great choice especially if you shhot from the prone alot, like in varmint hunting :).

I've been checking Ebay but I haven't seen much lately. I'll be checking out Savageshooters, didn't know that site existed. The price did put me off a bit considering you can by a complete basic rifle for around $200 :what:

I detest thumbholes. Don't like the looks, and they make it a pain for me to use the firearm, as I'm a lefty who shoots right handed guns (thumbhole contours are all wrong for that).

A 10/22 isn't a bolt action... I'd be more apt to get one on a semiauto or pump than a bolt, since the thumbhole doesn't get in the way of using the gun.

I have 2 rifles with thumbhole stocks. Both Remington 700's with Timney triggers, 7MM mag and .243. I also have the same rifles with factory stocks. I find the factory stock faster handling offhand but the thumbhole better for long range supported shooting. Doesn't matter for the .243 but the thumbhole makes the felt recoil from the 7MM much less. I'm not a big fan of the look of the thumbhole but for me they are very comfortable to shoot. I almost never shoot the .243, (less than a box of ammo through it) because the 7MM with thumbhole is so much fun to shoot.

Here is a link to where I get my stocks. First connected with this guy on ebay and since have delt with him directly. He has great customer service and is willing to work with you to figure out which stock will best fit your needs/desires.

I've shot several thumb-hole stocked rifles and think that they are very comfortable and easy to shoot. Thaey are a great plus for bench shooting and better for field shooting (IMHO), also.

I agree with ArmedBear.

Thumbhole stocks are very nice and ergonomic until you start trying to work the bolt quickly.

Pulling your thumb out of the hole to reach the bolt knob, and cramming your thumb back in the hole to fire, really gets awkward and slows things down. I never would have realized it if I hadn't discovered it for myself when I built my Mauser in 6mm Remington with a Boyd's thumbhole laminate stock.

If you're never going to use it in a situation where you want a fast followup shot, it should be fine.

brighamr, what make of stock is that? I may end up getting one for my 10/22 as well and that one looks pretty nice.

BTW I found one I like for my 93 at a good price, the auction ends next week and hopefully it will stay low
