Thumbhole stocks

The more I use the two thumbhole stocks I have, the more I like them for field use. The one on the CZ-455 .22 lr is my favorite, and maybe there's more to it than just a thumb hole. The high comb puts my eye immediately right in line with the scope and my grip seems firmer and steadier. The length of pull is also ideal but that's what's needed on any stock design. Didn't get a squirrel last season with the 455, but got one the previous year with the Benjamin Trail .22 pellet gun, ( it's legal here ), and it seemed easier to make a steady offhand shot aiming up.

I have one on my primary big game rifle, a mauser 98 build. The stock is Richards Microfit "dual grip" thumbhole. This allows a true thumbhole grip OR a conventional (but not optimal as the wrist is necessarily thicker) grip style. With some removal of wood to get the grip right for my hands, the stock is very comfortable and solid shooting. It is very nice for a relaxed hold while carrying or sitting in a stand with the rifle. I find it significantly increases stability in the offhand position and with moving targets. In short, I love it for actual field hunting situations.

I think one might run into trouble with finished thumbhole stocks available on the aftermarket. Fit to your hand, LOP, etc are critical with the thumbhole style, and such fit can only be had with a rasp and sandpaper.
