This is getting to be very repetitive. A loose tiger in New Jersey, another in Florida, and now one in Louisiana. Guess we better start practicing on how to deal with tigers!

Tiger Plays Game Of Hide-And-Seek

FORT POLK, La. - A Bengal tiger on the loose in the thick brush surrounding an Army base was winning a game of hide-and-seek for the second day Wednesday, despite efforts to entice the animal with raw chicken.

About 100 soldiers and sheriff's deputies searched the woods in Fort Polk for the cat, believed to be about a year old and 100 pounds.

"We're trying to flush the little rascal out, but he's not cooperating," said Scott Heinrich, owner of a wild animal consultancy that was brought in to track the tiger.

Soldiers set up nets with raw chicken and used helicopters in the search.

It was unclear where the animal came from, but it's likely a pet that escaped or was set free, said Leslie Whitt, director of the Alexandria Zoo, which assisted in the search. No one has claimed the animal, but several witnesses said it was wearing a collar.

The Army more than doubled the size of the search team, which began with 40 deputies and soldiers on Tuesday. The searchers will try to capture the animal in a trap or with a tranquilizer dart, but will kill it if it attacks, said Maj. Ron Elliott, a Fort Polk spokesman.

"If there's imminent danger, we'll have to take the tiger down," Elliott said.

Heinrich said that's unlikely. Unless cornered, the animal's first instinct will be to run away, he said.

So what's the best caliber to take down a bengal tiger?
This kitty's only about a hundred pounds - anything you'd use on a leopard will do. A .30/06 deer rifle ought to work just fine.

I wouldn't really be happy using anything less than a .375 H&H for a full-grown tiger.

I believe NJ Fish & Game used a .308 on a 460# Bengal tiger.

Latest estimate I heard on great cats being kept as pets is 10,000 and growing.

A year or so ago, five African lions were apparently "dumped" near Quitman, Arkansas. The deputy who shot them used an M1A, which is to say, .308.

100lbs?

Geez, it's a baby :).

Seriously. It'll want a good cuddle more than anything else :D.

(Yes, I'm the type that would actually try and calm it down and gently slip a leash on if I could. Sigh. Got a "critter soft spot" I guess.)

Poor little guy. He's probably scared shirtless. I hope they're able to capture and find a home for him. I'm a hunter, I'm no animal activist. But this critter probably is the result of an irresponsible owner.

I spent some time at Fort Polk. As thick as the underbrush can get, you could hide a 100lb tiger in 5 square kilometers for months.

I think now would be a great time for some politicians who oppose Citizens with firearms AND Vote against monies and Needs for the Miltary to do some "stumping" around Ft. Polk.

With no security
No audience
No Military

They can have a cell phone....

:)

[Tin Foil Hat Mode On] These releases are all just a big conspiracy so the people who seek to justify the purchase of .375's, .416's, double rifles, etc. can do so. :)
