Here's the deal, There is a public hunting area near my home where, for the first time, they're going to have a two month season on hogs. Guess they figure they need to thin 'em a bit. It's spot and stalk and they lay out of the place, 1000 acres, is such that it will be possible. That's pretty rare on hogs. I scouted it yesterday while dove hunting there and have some more scouting I need to do.
Anyway, the catch is that it's buckshot only, guess that's to keep things safe for more'n one hunter out there. Gotta wear hunter orange, but that hasn't kept people from shooting the orange hog before on public areas. So, I'm going to have to get close and put the pattern on the head cause I don't trust buck shot to penetrate a big hog. I'm going to want as tight a pattern as possible, like turkey hunting with 6s, but bigger head and bigger shot.
I will test my old double 12, but I'm getting a 10 gauge probably this week and will buy some 3.5" 00 (18 pellets) to play with in that gun. I am getting it for goose hunting, but this is another use I can put it to. What I'm wondering is if full choke will work with 00 or do I need to figure on opening the choke up a bit like with steel? I've never patterned buck before for tight patterns, never really concerned with it. I'll hit the pattern board soon as I get that 10 and some loads and try the 12 out, too. Just wondering what the wisdom is on this? I will have two choke choices for the 10, modified and turkey full. My double is choked f/m and I have a couple of other 12s with interchangeable chokes I can choose from. I wanna use that old SxS 12 if possible, though, but for I'd rather use the 10. I could find some 3" 12 00 for the SxS if I can't get the 10 to work with buck. But, 18 pellets, wow.
So, what am I looking at, likely, for choke?
