I am in the market for a range toy, heavy barrel 308. Dicks sporting goods has the Savage Model 10 CP for $749. I have heard bad stuff about Remington lately. If I bought a Remington it would be a model 700 Varmint. Which one would you choose and why? Help me decide!! Thanks and cheers.

All things equal, for me, I'd prefer Savage over Remington. However, the Remington has a 26" barrel, which I like. The Savage Carbine is also lighter, though. This would be a tough one for me to make. In fact, I can't even recommend one or the other for a complete stranger. LOL... Sorry. Good choices! Won't go wrong with either.

Savage is a great company who always puts forth their best effort. Remington's decline is probably overstated, though. My bias against them has to do with their getting a major contract from the State of New York after New York continually expresses disdain for firearm owners and the firearm industry. Not that I blame Remington THAT much... But when other companies move out of anti-gun states, it makes me like them better.

Yeah, i'm definitely a Remington fan. My hunting rifle is a Remington 700. Just all the crap you read on line kind of tends to make you second guess a $700 purchase!! But, i wouldn't be scared to buy one. I've talked to 2 reputable gun stores today, and BOTH told me to stay away from them. They actually didn't have any on the shelf due to the recalls. So, this is why i started researching other brands. I've heard and read really good reviews on Savage, i've just never owned one. How do ya'll think after market parts would be for the Savage? Stocks? Triggers? and such.....Thanks, hvychev77

I have owned several Remington rifles and been satisfied with them.

However:

I have also owned several Savage rifles. I have found them, with handloads they like, to be stupid accurate. My current deer rifle, a .308 with 20" barrel, shoots sub-MOA all day long with a 150gr Hornady bullet and Hodgon Varget powder in a Winchester case.

I've got a 700 SPS Varmint in .308, 26" barrel, probably the exact model (or darn close to it) that you mentioned. I've been very happy with it, seen some .75MOA groups at 200 yards (longest range I have access to) with better ammo. I did replace the trigger with a Timney and eventually the stock with a B&C, but it shot fine right out of the box.

Edit: with Savage's reputation alone, you probably cant go wrong with that route, either.

Try looking at some FNH rifles, I had a "Stealth" model and it was above in quality compared to my Rem. 700 SPS Varmit. I cannot say accuracy because I am not that great of a shot to see any difference, especially when using cheaper hunting or FMJ rounds.

But for quality, I'd look to an FNH made rifle.

I ended up buying the Savage today. List price was $749 with 10% off. So I was out the door for around $680! Now to find a scope......decisions decisions...thanks for all the replies fellas.

I have a bunch of savage rifles, they perform quite well, and with the barrel nut, you can exchange the barrel without needing a Gunsmith if you learn how to a just headspace.

I end up putting Shilen bull barrels on some of them, and I have one savage
that started off life as a .223, and now does 800 yard target shooting as a 7–08.
I have a friend who has an expensive 223 Savich that shoots bugeyes just amazing rifle.
