Hi guys,
Need your input on whether I messed things up. I went off the Winchester reloading data since I'm using their brand bullet and powder. I think I may have used too much crimp. Was going off the directions for the Lee factory crimp die, instead of comparing with a factory round, as I did with the OAL. Do you guys think these are okay to shoot, or is it time for the bullet puller? Only two hours for 80 rounds :p

I loaded 3 different batches using once fired brass, Win. 230 gr FMJ, W231:

winchester data, minimum of 5.4 grains, OAL 1.255 with a crimp of .465

then 5.6 grains OAL 1.26 crimp .465

and 5.8 grains OAL 1.265 crimp .465

I may be making a big mistake here, but are we discussing a .45 ACP round? If so you need only to load'em in to the magazine and shoot'em. Your specs seem to be O K except the last one which I noted according to my Winchester load manual is .1 grain above the maximum. I list a top load of 5.7 grains of W-231 for a FMJ 230 grain bullet. You may want to look at this one a little closer...Not sure why you are crimping .45 ACP rounds in the first place. My uncrimped rounds are .470.

Have a good time at the range....:)

If you are using a Lee crimp die for a .45 acp, that is the taper die, you will see that it states "Reguardless of how much crimp you apply, it will never make the case mouth too small to headspace against the chamber end"... Thats straight out the instruction sheet.

Guess what... SHOOT EM UP !!

ATAShooter...Good...You have the instructions for the Lee .45ACP FCD...I only have the FCD for .30-30 and .38 Special...Works for me....:D

Chickenfried...You shot them up yet???:D

Thanks for the help guys. Haven't shot them yet. Ranges are too busy on the weekends going on Monday. I made a mistake and I thought I was being extra careful :banghead: . Winchester min. load is actually 4.9 grains and 5.7 max as you said bushmaster. I think I got confused because I have three reloading manuals. One of them had a 5.4-6.1 min max range for this load. MIght pull the 5.8 ones.

What manual is listing at 6.1? I've seen that loading somewhere. Just can't remember where...That's got to be for the 200 grain FMJ...You can load 185 grain JHP to 6.8 of W-231. Make sure you have the right bullet weight...

ok, I'm new to this reloading stuff, so bare with me a bit. How much can .1 gr affect things. I'm not trying to be a smart ass, just trying to absorb as much as I can before I buy...

Thanks

Tom

That, my very welcome friend, is a very good question...Some powders, like W-231 tend to multiply their explosive power by doubling. In small volume cases such as 9mm X 19 (Luger) .1 grain W-231 makes one hell of a difference...

You have any more questions...Please ask away...There are many experts on this site...None of which are to be taken as gospel...Read at least two highly rated load manuals.:)

Okay found another mistake, boy I need to BE MORE CAREFUL. Speer manual 5.6-6.2, but for a 230 grain TMJ

Well went and shot my reloads today, and still got all my fingers :neener: . Only shot the 5.4 gr. loads. Even the 5.4 had more felt recoil than the S&B factory I brought as a comparison. So I didn't shoot the 5.6.
