Time to say hello... finally!

Hello all!
Been lurking for a long time and thought I would jump in and join the fun. I'm new to shooting so I sat back and learned. Learned alot indeed.

I own a few firearms, all small caliber and plan to purchase a cz75b as my first semi-auto. I finally found a range not too far from me that has NRA training. Trying to do what I can for RKBA by recently joining the NRA and GOA.

O.K. Now that I have introduced myself I have a question. A co- worker of mine wants to buy a gun for HD, however his wife is against it. Seems a distant uncle years ago commited suicide with a gun. How do you convince her? It won't be easy.

Convince a woman....! Not in my world....

My wife had an uncle that committed suicide by handgun a ways back. She was VERY anti gun in our home up untill the time that we brought our newborn daughter home. All of a sudden shes worried about our 'families saftey' (read; daughter) and is encouraging me to take up 'target' shooting.

Thats conviction (The state of being convinced. See Synonyms at certainty.) Certainly not convincing....

Welcome RNS. May I suggest, Your friend start real slow with the women convincing. Especialy considering her expierances. Maybe see if she will take an NRA saftey course or something similar with your friend. Let her learn that guns are tools nothing more nothing less, and unfortunatly sometimes bad things are done with these tools. Then try to convince her all is well in there household and that her husband should be trusted as well as her self. Then get a 22 or something that people think of as a pee shooter. Basicly take it nice and slow and have him work his way up to a shotgun or something similar. Take that mile one inch at a time.

As for your co-worker's wife, there's a theory that women can be reasoned with. (Of course, it's propounded by women.... )

If her distant uncle had used a gas oven, would she be against cooking? If a car, would she only take the bus? Guns are only tools, and like any tool, they can be used or misused.

He perceives a HD need, and thinks a gun fulfills that need.

If not a gun, then what? The need's still there. He doesn't need to convince her about having a gun. He needs to articulate to her the need for HD tools and training.

Gas ovens and cars are hard to use against home invaders....

Though she and I have had a parting of the ways, I will always respect her dedication and humanity. She knows something of what you convey is a concern of your co-worker's wife's: her child committed suicide with a firearm some years ago.

Additionally, please extend her my unreserved welcome. She may write me at length if she so desires; I will welcome and spend any time needed to help her understand: any who commit suicide do so with any means at their disposal. Their crisis that drives them to self-destruction is uniquely theri own - and it has nothing to do with the modality they utilize.

Hello RNS!

You'll like this place. As to convincing the woman you mentioned. Hard issue. My only uncle was killed in a hunting accident. My mother was the one who found him. All her life guns were absolutely forbidden. No reasoning with her. She was that way until she died. Not much I could do about it. FWIW.
