I think that if the end result of this incident is only a restriction on the size of magazines for rifles, and possibly handguns, then the gun community can count itself lucky. It doesn't matter whether or not the new rule is effective in stopping gun violence, only that it makes the public feel like something has been done. The gun control folks think that they are in the drivers seat right now and are hoping to really make up lost ground over the deaths of these little children. We might be lucky if the worst that occurs is a large capacity magazine ban and a renewal of the so-called assault weapon ban. My biggest worry is that this terrible incident will be used to lessen the chances for a meaningful concealed carry law here in Illinois by making even the pro-carry legislators a bit hesitant out of fear that they will be portrayed as insufficiently concerned over mass shootings.

If you were unarmed, at the school in CT, when would you choose to jump the shooter? I bet you'd wait until he was reloading. So what is irresponsible here?

If I was a possible target and unarmed, I'd certainly consider it rather than hoping I didn't get shot. Especially so if I had no cover. But a mall or movie theater may be tougher than a small school room, easier to hide, and you have some cover or concealment items.

I'd hope he's close, look for slide lock, hope he's doing it slow, and hope for a yanked magazine eject instead of drop free. But it is still risky and there were a lot of "hopes". Would be better if done with multiple people from multiple directions. A gun jam may be a better opportunity unless they quickly do a tap-rack-bang.

I do agree that most of these people don't have the best gun handling skills and may get too close to people which would certainly help.
