I believe there was a recent thread here that ended up discussing loss of hearing from shooting.

From this today's DUF Morning Mailing:

Acupuncture May Help Tinnitus: …The research findings were made in animals, but they suggest that available treatments such as acupuncture, if used to target nerves in the head and neck, may provide relief for some people plagued by tinnitus, says Susan E. Shore, Ph.D., lead author of the study and research professor in the Department of Otolaryngology and the Kresge Hearing Research Institute at the U-M Medical School. People with tinnitus sense ringing or other sounds in their ears or head when there is no outside source…

Me too. I've gotten used to it but there are days when its louder than normal.

23 years of working around aircraft has taken its toll on my hearing.

Tinnitus is not necessarily caused by exposure to loud sounds ... I've been plagued by it for about 15 years and while most times it sounds like the singing of cicada in the summertime other times it is deafening and sounds as though I'm standing directly in front of a trucks airhorn ... mine may have been made worse by years of abuse of my ears, but my little sister (46) has it even worse and she has never spent any time in a loud environment or shot any kind of firearm ... last treatment I heard of was iffy at best, done by laser and cost about a grand w/ no guarantee of any improvement and was not covered by insurance ...

Don't try this at home

One day in my mis-spent youth, I got the bright idea to pull a Starsky and Hutch type scenario; I was going to roll up, burst out from the door of my '72 Montego MX, and fire across the hood of the car with my .41 mag S&W Model 57.

Naturally, I wasn't wearing any hearing protection; after all, it's only a couple or three rounds, right? I don't need no stinkin' hearing protection for a couple of shots, right? WRONG! BIG MISTAKE! I don't know how that Eastwood fella does it!

I got off two shots across from the drivers fender, over the hood, at the offending beer cans, rupturing them spectacularly! I would have done Clint Eastwood proud, but the pain in my right ear was excruciating!:what:

The windshield reflected all of the noise back to my ear, so I got a double blast of sound pressure, from some already high intensity handloads.

I COULD NOT HEAR ANYTHING but ringing out of that ear for about 2 or 3 days and it ached intensely! I couldn't walk straight because my equalibrium was off kilter too.

I hope todays young people are smarter than I was and wear plugs and muffs when shooting, and maybe they won't have to suffer the consequenses of poor hearing and tinnitus in their adult years.;)

The little voices in my head are not about to be out-done by tinnitus! I am fortunate in that I don't have this affliction; not however for want of opportunity just luck. I have taken to wearing both plugs and muffs; what is next, belts and suspenders?
