Aloha to all. I decided to buy a new Ruger MKIII Hunter. I've read a few posts on other forums on how difficult it is to disassemble/reassemble the Ruger MKIII. I've seen the Guntalk-online.com website that has detailed instructions on field/detail stripping. I've also watched a couple videos on doing this task. I wanted to also hear any other info other members could suggest in being successfully in taking down and putting back together the MKIII.

BTW, I am also planning to install the Volquartsen Accurizing Kit and Exact Extractor in my new pistol. Is there anything I should look out for when installing this kit? Mahalo in advance.

If you follow the directions exactly and in order you will have no problems. The Guntalk website is your best friend here if you experience any mechanical issues with the MKIII Rugers. The only issue is the times when the mag must be inserted or removed for a particular step and making sure the hammer is completely forward against the bolt to allow the hammer strut to fit properly into the mainspring housing at the end of reassembly.

Thanks for your responses. Practice makes perfect so I'll field strip the pistol first to get used to doing it. I'll then tackle the detail strip procedure when I install the accurizing kit.

All the best.

First, you'll do youself a big favor by getting rid of the magazine disconnect. To remove the existing extractor you need to almost remove the firing pin retaining pin. This will alow you to remove the tension on the extractor spring. If you haven't shot your new piece yet be sure to completely disassemble & clean to remove preservative & any debris then light lube.
Think about getting some extra magazines and a UCL. It's well worth the $$.

I recently got a mark I and had no clue how to take it down. I got directions off the internet, didn't do it for me. So I went to a friend and asked him if he knew(biggest gun nut I know knows about everything and if he doesn't he knows someone else who does) of course he did. He got out his mark II and showed me it is really hard if you don't know what your doing it once you figure out to leave the trigger alone until you slide the bolt assembly in then pull the trigger which drops this little bar thing(can't remember the technical term) it's easy. I can do it in under a minute now. Take it to someone who knows how to take them down such as a friend or gunsmith and have them show you how to do it even if you have to pay them it's worth it trust me.

+1 Jolly Rogers.

But...I have one and have fired thousands of rounds through it and have yet to fully strip it. I usually bore snake it after use at the range, Hopps #9 and brass brush, patch & oil after I get home. swab, brush, clean & oil action and fee area. 5 min or less process.

I won't detail srtip it until it fails and is necessary.

also, I like it just the way it is. It needs nothing....but ammo.

No reason to do a detail strip unless you are replacing parts. Bullseye's site, the guntalk-online link posted above has the best instructions for either I've found. The field strip is not all that hard, if you follow the instructions, and practice a couple times.

I've put the full VQ accurizing kit in my MKIII Hunter and decided to replace just the trigger and sear in my other three Rugers. I can't tell any difference between them. The VQ extractor is a good idea, although none of mine seem to need it and won't get the extractor until they do.

I use blue loctite for things like sight screws and the VQ trigger adjustment screws. Keeps the screws where you want them. My last Ruger purchase was a used MKII 22/45. It didn't seem to have been fired much and the price was very good. First trip to the range I noticed the front sight would loosen up. Loctite solved the problem. I'm willing to bet that the loose sight was one of the reasons the original owner decided to trade-in the pistol.

Mahalo to all that has responded to my thread I really appreciate it. Also, thank you tlen and Jolly Rogers for the *ULC* recommendation. I just put in an order for one. I already have 8 NIB magazines from MidwayUSA which are on sale until the end of the month.
