While deployed to Iraq at the end of 2008 I planned to buy a Ruger MKIII as a project gun. I ended up installing a Tactical Solutions barrel, Volquartsen kit and extractor, and modifying the front and rear sights myself. After a few months of work I've got it just where I want it.

If you're interested, you can read a very detailed account and see photos at

If nothing else there may be some helpful info there for anyone considering a similar project. My wife prefers the Buckmark I setup but I really like this Ruger. I like the brass bead front sight so much that I will be making one for the Buckmark too.

Thanks. I put a lot of time and energy into that thing. It really does shoot great too. I shoot it as well as my S&W Model 41 and better than my Buckmark. Of course that's probably just a testament to my moderate shooting skills; the guns are great but my skills are the limiting factor.

The burn wasn't too bad and it made a funny story.

Nice write-up with pics! Both the buckmark and the MKIII came out great. Look like fun projects. I have to admit though, I've had a couple of beers while cruising the forum at home tonight and it took me a minute to figure out exactly what I was looking at when the picture of the spent casing-mark came up. I thought it was an armpit or something at first... no offense :D Makes me want to work on my buckmark though, well done!

Nice Ruger and Buckmark. I need to get a Tacsol barrel for one of my Rugers. They are great platforms in which to modify.
