Tired of front sight post....

Ok guys. I am tired of the FSP getting in the way of my eotach. Time to go with a flat top gas block. I would like something high quality. I have a DPMS 16 inch barrel, m4 style. That should be .750 right? I'm not sure on that, but my question is anyone have any recommendations. So far I found one on Bravocompany made by PRI. They any good? What do you think is a fair price for the gunsmith to put it on? Thanks.

1) Most barrels are .75" at the gas block, but measure to be sure. Other potential sizes are .625" (pencil barrel) and .936" (bull barrel).

2) You can just dremel off the offending parts of the current gas block if you're so inclined. People do that on a regular basis, and it works fine.

3) Many companies make low profile gas blocks and/or rail topped models. Some to look at would be Daniel Defense, YHM, Troy, Midwest Industries. The PRI is probably nice and high quality but may be a relatively pricier option. Of course if you're paying a gunsmith to do it that will add to the cost as well.

The "gas block" pictured above is actually a cut down FSB that I took the liberty of "low proing" to the absolute minimum.

Most of them just cut it off. Then get longer rail to cover it up with add of folding sights.

Doesn't it witness with your Eotech? I just bought an inexpensive Vortex Strikefire to switch out with my Mark AR scope and it is an absolute witness with my FSP on a flattop receiver.

I believe it witnesses with the OP's Eotech, he's just tired of seeing it in his sight picture.

I'd just hate to see him saw it off then wish he had it back later. I guess if he buys a fold down set of BUIS it won't matter. Haven't lived with my set up long enough to know if it will bother me or not but for close shots I like knowing the irons are there.

Yeah it does witness with the eotech, but like txhoghunter said I just am tired of seeing it in my sight picture. I really considered taking the dremel to it, but I went with this instead. What you guys think?



By the way, r.w. dale, that came out sweet. I already have Troy drop in 7" quad rail so I wanted a flat top to put a flip down buis or in this case one integral on the block.

I kinda like seeing mine through the eotech, it lets me get a perfect cowitness when I dot the sight post.

I don't mind looking at my front sight post in my field of view. I can ignore it easily. To me, irons are the more important then the eotech, and I would never cut mine down.

I would just cut off the factory gas block.


Not sure why people are so keen that their sights cowitness while they are shooting with the red dot. The purpose of a red dot is improved speed of sight acquisition, and wasting time to line up the sights with the dot defeats the whole purpose. A 1/3 lower cowitness is nice so you can confirm zero and use the irons if your red dot goes down.

If you shoulder the rifle consistantly, the red dot should line up with the front post. I perfectly zeroed my rear BUIS, by simply turning on the eotech, and centering the rear sight.

I figured the flip-up front sights were the best of both worlds- you still have irons, but no front sight post to bug me. That MI block has the flip front sight. With the 4x magnifier there is a faint tiny hint of shadow that I think may be the FSP. So getting it gone was a priority for me. Can't wait till it comes, but the price made me cringe. Another thing the wife don't know about.

My rear buis is a MI flip up, great product!

Running a magnifier, and seeing a shadow, would kinda bug me too!

If you don't run the magnifier you can simply buy a front cover and keep it closed, assuming you shoot both eyes open. Sounds odd but your brain will superimpose the dot onto the target your other eye is seeing. Works good in foul weather too.

I'm in a similar situation, I also need to get a flip-up front sight of some kind for my railed gas block.

I think I've narrowed my selection to either the MI or the new Troy sight., although I briefly considered GG&G and YHM as well.

Has anyone used the gas block variants of any of these sights or had better luck with some other brand? It would be kinda nice to see pics of the anyone's gas block-mounted sights as some of them look a little weird from a solely aesthetic standpoint, IMHO.
