Ok, I've done a bit of searching, but I just need to be 100% clear on this. I am a Louisiana resident, going to law school in Mississippi, and I am glad that I can keep my gun loaded in my vehicle when traveling between the two states. I do not have my Louisiana concealed carry permit yet. I will be working on that this summer.

I will be traveling with my wife into Tennessee to visit some relatives in Nashville next week. It is my understanding that without a permit, my handgun needs to be unloaded with the ammo not in my "immediate vicinity." The safest method, I assume, would be to lock the gun in its case with ammo separate, both in the trunk. It seems like that really defeats the purpose of carrying the weapon in my car, though. Am I safe carrying the gun in the glovebox and a mag stored, say, behind the seat? Is it not feasible to have the gun accessible while in Tennessee?

Thanks in advance, guys. Sorry if this has been asked before. The law is just a little hazy.

If you can conceivably access the gun and ammo (or a passenger) while in your seat it is just the same as if you carry it loaded and duct taped to the steering wheel. (As I had it explained to me.)

Simple solution: Pay 20 bucks to NH, get a non-res. It is good in TN, and then you can duct tape it to the steering wheel. I have heard NH actually can get permits issued and sent to people in less than a week. Don't know if they are still that fast.

Interesting about the NH permit. Just to be clear, I do not have a Louisiana permit of any form or fashion, as it is not necessary here or in Mississippi. It appears that NH requires a copy of a permit from another state. Also, I unfortunately wouldn't have the time to work on that.

So I guess I will have to keep the gun in the trunk. Oh well. Thanks for the info, SomeKid, as that's what I was looking for.

You can get a non-resident NH permit without a permit from your own state. You just have to get a written statement from your local sheriff stating you are qualified leagally.

I have a NC CHL, but I am waiting on my NH to arrive as backup in case I loose my wallet or the like.

I have attached a pdf of the NH non resident permit application. You should read it. If I understand it right you DO have to provide a copy (front and back) of your permit from another state, the letter from the sheriff only applies to VT.
