TN or NC for gun friendliness

I live in NC, and I'm only waiting to finish some Criminal Justice education that has me marooned in Charlotte and then I'm moving to East Tennessee.
And, a lot of that has to do with cost of living, Real ID, and gun laws.

North Carolina is home to some of the most convoluted legislation you've ever tried to read and abide by...

In short: Tennessee by a mile.

I've lived in NC my whole life except for a 4 year stint in TN for college. TN is far better than NC for gun owners. NC's gun laws vary widely by county (well, not the LAWS themselves, but the sheriffs have their choice of which parts to enforce). For example, in my hometown in western NC, I could fill out a pistol permit application in 5 minutes and it would be approved inside a week after living in the county for 30 days. I now live in Chapel Hill, the most liberal area in the state, and getting a permit requires county residency for a full year, 3 signed and notarized affadavits attesting to my good character by non-relative county residents, and will only occasionally be approved inside 30 days. TN's laws make gun purchases much easier, particularly for handguns and NFA.

Gun law issues aside, NC is swinging hard leftist. You name the issue and count on NC being way over there. The comment on convoluted laws is right on point. I lived in CLT 11 years before going over the wall. Would never consider going back.

Well, I'm a Georgian, but I live in the Chattanooga metro area (and work in Downtown Chattanooga). I have to say East Tennessee is a quite a place. The mountains in this area are absolutely beautiful, and the gun laws in TN are pretty decent (most of the laws in Georgia are good, too, but carry laws are a wee bit too nebulous).

As far as I'm concerned, the purchase permit thing knocks NC out as a state I'd ever live in.

NC a mess

wheelgunslinger: Sir; didn't you just say a mouthful:D
I belong to [peripheries] argument groups that oppose "Controlling the People"
to better aide the CRIMINAL.
NC legislation has a some mighty fine leadership with a not to small group of sheep.
We need to stay on-top locally and nationally. SPEAK-UP TO BE HEARD.

Keep in touch "wheelgunslinger", apparently NC will miss you.

Craig,
I grew up in NC, moved all over the planet (nearly) and came back to pursue some education and be near my ever expanding family.
I'll agree with you that we do need to stay on top of things, since one state can ultimately effect others. I'll be around for the next year or so, and will be happy to join any groups I have time to join, though.

I have lived in NC all my life, near the Charlotte area, except for my college years in AL.Charlotte is not the place it use to be 20-30 years ago.I have looked at places in eastern TN and sw VA.

The only thing that has kept me from leaving is the job opportunities. The politics in NC are leaning more towards the left everyday-although you can get into the country where it does not effect your day to day life as much.

If I were to move,it would be to Tn between your choices.Land is cheaper in TN than NC also, although the places we looked at in eastern TN were pretty close in price to NC stuff.A little west of Knoxville were some very nice places resonably priced.

NC is going to hell in a gasoline soaked handbasket IMO.

The Raleigh/Durham area has good universities (UNC, NC State, Duke, Wake Forest) and this has attracted a lot of high tech industries along with the monied urbanites that follow them.

In he past 10 years it has gone from "already-pretty f'ing-bad" to "omg-this-sucks".

I am not speaking solely about gun friendliness just socialism in general.

NC is a nice place to livee, but some of its laws are screwy, in prticular the handgun purchase law. There are also a lot of blissninnies here.
But you can get a CCW which will act the same as a pistol purchase permit.
The pistol permit system of applying to the sheriff would have been a good background check in 1919, when I believe the law was introduced (it was actually designed to keep po' black folks from defending themselves from the Klan) but it is now stupid, as sherriffs generally know nothing about you.
NICS would be heaven.
Also, Durham has one of the best healthcare units in the country. That's one reason we moved here (we have three people with marfan's syndrome in the family)

I moved to Western NC, in '68, from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

I had no idea then how bad the gun, hunting and fishing laws are, how punishing the tax laws are, nor how badly corrupt and petty the controlling (Democrat) politicians are. And that's being made worse by transit influx from the northern cities and colleges. By the time I found all this out I had pretty well planted roots here so I've stayed a long time. It's livable for a civilized man but mostly because of the natural beauty.

Retired now, the kids are grown and we are thinking seriously about moving to East Tenn. No doubt in my mind, if you have a choice, take the western slope of these mountains or south of the Cumberland gap.

Definitely TN. The only place in the area that is better is KY. Of course, I'm biased. If TN would fix their restaurant carry law, they'd pass us. I don't think they have an income tax in TN.

I don't think they have an income tax in TN.

Nope, no state income tax. Sales tax is a little higher than some states though(around 8.5% I think) but property taxes are reasonable depending on
the area. And gas prices always seem to be below the national average.

Tennessee

I have the misfortune to live in the People's Republic of Mecklenburg - Charlotte, NC on the map. I moved here, much to my regret, from Memphis - actually Raleigh which is a bedroom community to Memphis and/or the Naval Air Station.

Tennessee is much more gun friendly and THEY HAVE NO STATE INCOME TAX. Corruption in NC makes Chicago look like a Boy Scout camp; currently in this city they have "water police" out busily writing $100 fines for the poor sap who makes the mistake of washing his car or, Heaven forbid, watering is lawn on the wrong day (note: you can not wash your car, period!!). City does not have the personnel to deal with crime but boy can they send them out in force to fine homeowners!

North Carolina CCW laws are much like the surrounding states and even here in Charlotte I have not seen private business firms that were posted. I am sure there are some but I have not seen them. Of course, the law takes care of some places - like any place that charges admission - so we don't go to the movie theaters and count the savings in dollars as a plus.

Although there are problems everywhere and surely no place is the perfect place to live, but given a choice between TN and NC, it is TN hands down.

I long for the day that I can escape from this liberal Hell-hole and move to the free state of South Carolina - my company did over 9 years ago so my office is actually there and I spend much of my time there as well as buy most of my "stuff" there - If you do move to NC and can do so, make it a small town as the small towns are still much like they were 30 years ago.

I've lived in NC all my life. The CCW law in NC was a good thing. It bypassed the handgun permit red tape nightmare. When I became legal age to buy a handgun, the sheriff in my county claimed he would only issue 1 per person ever. I did manage to get 2 my first application, since it was a month prior to election day.

NC has the strongest and most organized grassroots organization I have ever been associated with. They never rest. Representatives in the General Assembly are scared of them, even more than the NRA. If it wasn't for them, NC would have serious firearms legislation on the books by this point. I hear Tenessee and Louisiana are very pro-gun Southern states.

I live in Cleveland, about 30 minutes northeast of Chattanooga. TN gun laws are pretty good. I'm originally from Indiana, the they have great laws too. But I love Tennessee. Beautiful country. I'm about 40 minutes from both Georgia and North Carolina. Chattanooga is a growing city, with lots of job opportunities. My wife and I both commute there for work. (Well, I do 3 days a week. The FD gets me the rest of the days.) There is also a nice class 3 dealer here in Cleveland, if that is your thing.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:
SECTION 1. G.S. 14?269.3(b) is amended by adding a new subdivision to read:
"(5) A person on the premises of an establishment that is a restaurant under G.S. 18B?1000(2) or G.S. 18B?1000(6) provided the person has a valid concealed handgun permit under Article 54B of Chapter 14 of the General Statutes."
SECTION 2. This act becomes effective December 1, 2007.

This basically says after Dec 1, 2007, you can carry in a restaurant that serves beer and wine if you have a ccw permit.

I'm a Coloradan who's deciding between buying a house in Shelby County (TN) or De Soto County (MS). Moving to TN/MS is a bit horrifying: no legally carrying to protect my spouse and child in parks, restaurants, etc.??? And fingerprinting for handgun purchases (TN)??? Time to move into the 1990s, folks! If the job wasn't so important, there's no way in the world that I'd do this.

Black Adder,

You've been here, you know how great things are in TN. Heck, we've got the Great Smokies, Dolly Parton, and other beautiful mountains. (ahem) Not only that, we still have the remnants of the TN Mafia floating around, although we haven't gotten together for a trip to the range in awhile.

my vote is for MS (i have family in both counties you mention). last i knew you could get more for less, housing wise in DeSoto county than anywhere in Shelby.

even though i have family living in Memphis i won't move back there (memphis/shelby county)
