Well my fellow Tennesseans, our glorious House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh killed a few of our bills again.

We had three bills up for a vote today, 1 was deferred till 4/2, the others are dead. To pass, a bill needed a majority of the 5 person committee's votes.

HB3667 would have removed the restriction on carrying in parks. The committee members voted 3-2 to pass it on. Wait you say, we had a majority? Well, the House has a nice rule. The Speaker can vote on any committee. He came and voted, and voted Nay, making it 3-3. Tie means the bill dies. Jimmy Naifeh came down, and made sure this bill died. If this annoys you, remember it when you vote this fall.

The next bill would have let faculty and staff at public educational facilities (schools - university) carry. This was HB3014. I admit, as a student I wasn't fond of this bill, but it was a step in the right direction. However, it died 2-3-1. Two for, 3 against (one being Naifeh) one present not voting. Naifeh made sure this bill died hard.

HB0702 was our restaurant carry bill, and it is still alive, at least until Naifeh kills it. (Which, I have 0 doubt he does.)

Tough luck again for us, my fellow Tennesseans. Remember this when you vote this fall, it is currently 53D and 46R in the state House. 4 seats change, and Naifeh won't be speaker.

Oh, and by the way, the other 2 antis are Briley and Sontany. Briley is the drunk from a few months back, and Sontany once asked a TFA member why he would even go to a place he might need to defend himself (because we always go places intending to be attacked).

I watched streaming video of the subcommittee meeting. By the time it was over, I was so annoyed I didn't get any work done for about an hour while I stewed.

What particularly bugged me was the fate of 3667. Rep. Nicely made what I thought was a great case for the bill. He mentioned that over the 14-year history of HCP in TN, permit holders had proven themselves to not be dangerous to the public. Then some commissioner got up and basically said, "No one ever gets robbed in our parks! People don't want to be around somebody with a gun!" And that was pretty much the end of it.

It just proves to me that we've got legislators who are not concerned with making informed decisions about our laws. Instead, they are quite clearly serving their own shortsighted personal agenda.

I don't hold out a lot of hope for 702, but regardless of the outcome we have got to take back the House this fall and evict Emporer Naifeh and his minions.

So, write your reps, Naifeh, and the members of the committee. Let them all know that due to their actions, you will vote Republican, fund Republican campaigns, and work to see the entire Democratic apparatus in TN dismantled.

Yup. And see if you can get a few friends to do it too. Also ask each of them to get a few friends who will join in that group action. Everyone knows at least a couple of other people with similar ideas. Start growing that group--e-mail is good for that--and have each person in it write the same thing on each issue. Do it frequently so the politicians can't forget that you're there and are gunning for them.

Don't forget to send copies of those e-mails to key people in the Democratic Party too. It lets them know what they need to do to get your support. And if your letters and e-mails are good, what you're doing can point them at issues they might not realize exist.

Pretty soon your little group will have impact greater than its size. Politicans count numbers of people. Do as Buzz Knox says, and stick to it, and the politicians will take notice.

By the way, make sure that whatever you send anyone is rational and controlled. It's easy to write off gun owners as crazies. Avoid that trap.

Wow and I thought TN was a free state. Cross TN off my list of possible moves.

Come on in. We need all the good guys we can. Just don't move to Memphis.

Tennessee is a lot more free than some states, though it does need a bit of work.

Still, what state doesn't? In our case, just removing a couple of lunkheads from office will work wonders.

And one other thing I've been wondering about, since Tuesday... If this Heller thing shakes out like we're all hoping it will, I wonder what, if any, effect it'll have on the Tn legislature, and people like Jimmy Naifeh... Could it be possible that his days of blocking certain firearms legislation are over after June?

Yeah I know... probably not. Still, it's a nice thought. And many things have changed for the better, for us gun owners, these past 10 or 15 years.

One can always hope, I guess.

He most certainly will kill it, as he has done every previous time.

Hey, I love living in Memphis. While it has more than enough problems, there are a lot of great things about it, too. Besides, the logic of your statement applies here also. Memphis needs all the good guys we can get!

WOW what an a-hole, ok I will make it my mission this year to get this guy out! my big hope for this year was to get that damn campus carry bill passed and that one guy killed it F him. I work at a college and its not in a good part of town we have had several shootings on the property since I have worked here so I do think I need some form of protection beyond the incompetent security guards or the solar powered help phones places in almost useless locations.

I am Mad and i'm about to not take it any more.

sent this to him...

Sir,
I am writing to tell you that you have done a great dis-service to the people of Tennessee that I can not forgive.
By single handedly striking down HB3667, HB3014 and probably HB0702 and limiting my rights you have completely lost my respect.
I will thus make it my goal this year to see that you are not re-elected and that your party losses the majority.

Thanks but no thanks,
Aaron Ceraldi

WOW!

You guys-n-gals in TN REALLY need to give Jimmy "The Red" Nay-Say the boot right down the Capitol Steps...

Not that there isn't a bunch of ahhhh "Legis-Sneakers" here in Ohio that REALLY need to suffer the same fate....

Guys, I wish you luck. I was born and lived in Tenn. until I was ten. I tried moving back in '98 but couldn't stand it. It used to be a beautiful, good place to live. I'd like to see it that way again.

This is the state of politics at all levels in this great Republic. It is only through the ignorance of the great unwashed that people like this get elected over and over again.

For all the Tennesseans here, especially those in Naifeh's district, Legally Armed over at TNGunOwners has been working hard at getting Naifeh unseated this fall. Hard enough to get an intimidating phone call about the matter. But he has succeeded in finding someone to run against Naifeh.

Read more here.

I can't vote for him, but I can at least take action in supporting his campaign. We've got to get this goon out of the Speaker chair.

Naifeh

SK: How ya doing bud ? Well, I hope.

Anyways, everything Pro 2A always gets killed by Naifeh. The sooner we get him out of office, the sooner stuff will be passed.

Unfortunately, the more I read about Rory Bricco, the less convinced I am that he's a viable opponent for Naifeh. Not to mention his overt flaunting of his faith bothers me- but that's an aside, really. I'm not in is district, so I can't vote for him anyway.

The better solution would be to wrest control of the House from the Dems. However, I'm new to TN politics (been a resident for about 8 months now) so I don't know if that's viable or not. I gather the House has been under Dem control for a long time now...

anthro, Naifeh is secure in his district. The best way to get rid of him will be for Republicans to take 4 more House seats. Just four seats separate Tennessee from better gun laws. By long time, do you mean since Reconstruction?

As an aside, hope you don't mind religious candidates, as in this part of America it plays a larger role than other places. Next time you drive down Hixson Pike (I live in one of the Chattanooga suburbs neighbor) look around, the largest buildings you will see are all churches.

Lastly, since you are a local shoot me a PM sometime. No idea where in Hixson you are, but I used to live out there. Maybe we can hit the range together sometime.

I don't mind religious candidates simply because they're religious; what concerns me is when I get a feeling that they believe their religion should be a basis for public policy.
