BATF approved the Form 1 on 7/19 that I filed in April and I found out earlier this week. (ATF didn't email me the approved F1 with stamp, like they are supposed to. I found it sitting in my account when I logged into atfonline.gov.)

Tonight I engraved the receiver and chopped the barrel to 12.4". I cut it a little long with a hacksaw, then faced and crowned the barrel in my lathe. The barrel is ~19.5mm in diameter, so it just fit through the 20mm spindle bore. The barrel steel cut easily with a carbide indexable insert while turning at ~450 RPM.

Aside from looking right, it handles a lot better. It's still heavy but the balance is much better without the extra 4.5" of barrel sticking out on the end. I'm looking forward to shooting it soon.

Semi auto, I assume?

Unfortunately, yes. Although I doubt I'd be able to afford all the 9mm I'd shoot up if it had a happy switch.

I have shot it quite a bit with the original 16.5" barrel, including in a practical carbine match. It handles so much better now, though.

Nice Dave! I like projects like these, the older stuff that was designed with shorter barrels is much cooler to SBR than every day AR's/AK's (although I admit my first form 1's were an AR and an AK).

I have a PPS-43C in 9mm that I plan on SBRing at some point. I really hope 41P holds off a long time or goes away because I can't see sending fingerprints and photographs to the ATF.

And thanks for the tip on not getting the email, I have a friend who should be getting approved any day now and I mentioned it to him because he never logs in just checks his email.
