i currently have a sig 556 and am considering buying another, i do not have a precision rifle, should i get a good bolt action or more carbines? whats more practical?

Depends entirely on what kind of shooting you like to do.

Now is the time to buy any semi-auto, before pre-election panic and price hikes set in.

I think you should get a really good precision bolt action, such as the Remington 700. Having more types of guns is always a better option. Also you can buy the R700; it is a very accurate and relatively cheap rifle. You can buy it in 26 different calibers (for whatever suites you needs).

I can identify with this. I was the opposite, several target/varmint bolt guns in the safe. Gave it some thought and decided to diversify somewhat. I now have lever action rifles and an M4 Colt carbine.

Why have all the same?

Well, I'd bet you will have a harder time finding an AR at a good price in a few months than you will a good bolt gun.

The "practical" thing for most guys would be to buy a loading press and shoot more. But then, that's not as cool as telling guys about the new gun you bought.

I'd worry less about a bunch of strangers ideas on the internet and more time on what I want, but maybe that's just me. I get stuff that makes me happy, not everyone else.

A AR-10 Carbine well give you precision out to 800yds. If you want to shoot longer range, then a longer barrel well put you past 1Kyds. The 7.62 AR's are amazing rifles, only drawback is weight.

What about a 6.8 AR15?
Lots of choices out there and since you reload, all the better!

What do you use your 556 for? Hunting? Work? Plinking? If you will use it for work or plan on doing some carbine classes or it is your main defensive weapon I would suggest having a backup. If it is just a fun gun I'd get something different.

my 556 is my all around defense/hunting rifle, I have a 2-7 power scope on it to give it a lot of flexibility

this help?

whats more practical?

My dad and I have two reloading presses actually

Since you've got the presses: more bullets, powder, primers and brass :D

Oh, and if you haven't already, get a USGI sling on the Sig and take it to an Appleseed course. There is no substitute for a solid weekend learning and practicing the fundamentals.

I have 3 guns in .223. All have their puropses. I have a Remington 700 SPS Tactical which is my "accurate" gun for coyote hunting. I also have a Ruger Mini 14 with opne sights which I use also for coyote hunitng when I ride around in my truck - I plan to add a 1-4x scope on it in the near future. Then I have a AR15 DPMS for home self defense.

waterhouse, lots of stuff, but i use it for a PVS-27. only pic i have is on an SR25

12gcody... You cant go wrong with either choice really. Just buy what suits your needs or your fancy, whichever seems to want to be satisfied the most. I am a one gun kinda guy myself... one of each kind that is :)

Perhaps if you already reload for a caliber you are considering for a long range precision rilfe that will help you.

The AR10 is a great choice too....

20" precision AR (HBAR, free-floated, etc.) would satisfy both criteria.

You could get both a precision bolt rifle and a carbine, in the form of a K31... The "K" is for Karabiner, after all...

Would only set you back about 400$ including ammo, too...
