To Scope or not to Scope?

For christmas my wife brought me my dream gun a Swiss K-31 straight pull Bolt action in 7.5x55.I've heard of their inherent accuracy but not shooting long range "past about 200 yards or so how many of you would scope it and with what?I wouldn't want to put a cheap scope on it and what power scope would you guy's suggest since it is ballistically similar to a .308 witch is one caliber I don't have.So far I got a 7rm,8mm Mauser,30-06,2-7.62x39's,220swift,Ar-223,M-44 Mosin-nagant,a bunch of 22's,5 shotguns,270 pump,243,3 muzzel-loaders and pistols that my father-in law gave me theres about 10 ranging from 22 to 45 acp.Oh yea a Reminton 222 also a win94 30-30.So thats why I'm learning reloading from him.But what about scoping the K-31 would it be worth it?

Here's what I do. Before you put any $$$ into a scope, try several scopes off the guns you already have and see which one suits your new gun. That'll give you an idea of what you need to take advantage of that particular caliber.

You have a nice 7mm with a scope, leave this alone and shoot it, it will be plenty accurate out to 500 yds, use it to get to be a better shot.

IMO that depends on your eyes. Many of us would shoot with irons more if we had better eyesight, but we don't, so we don't.
Side note: good move learning to reload. Other than getting married and getting my dog, that's the best decision I ever made. You'll think so too.

Is the rifle already configured for a scope or would you have to drill and tap it. If you have to make any modifications to add the scope, don't.

While there are no-drill scope mounts for the K31, I wouldn't. It has great irons. The Swiss sighted it for a 6:00 hold that for me works about perfect on NRA high power style targets. Yes, the aiming black will look just about as wide as the front sight. Just focus on that front sight.

If you do go the scope route however, remember you will need some sort of cheek piece to keep a cheek weld because the stock is made for the irons.

If the rifle is only considered accurate to 200 yards you don't really need a scope, but if you do zero the irons out to 100 yards and use high mounts so you can see the sights and then zero the scope out to 200 yards just my two cents

I have several K-31's and all have scopes. The main reason is most of the guns have low front sights and start off at 200 or 300 meters. I use the S&K scope mounts which replace the rear sights. (http://www.scopemounts.com/index.html?main.html). There is no drilling involved and the rifle can be restored without leaving a mark. The only thing is with this type of mount you will need a "scout" scope (extra long eye relief). I have used the inexpensive NcStar scout scopes on a couple of these rifles and they work just fine out to 300 yds. Bassett scope mount for M1A question

my eyes aint what they used to be and I am gonna scope one of my M1As, a standard loaded model. I have decided to go with a Bassett mount with high picatinny rail that you can still use your irons with. anybody out there have one of these and will it still work with a 50mm objective as far as still being able to use irons and also no ejection problems.
