I appreciate your reviews regarding the big 3 gun matches.
I would like to go to at least one big one in 2006.
I have a few questions for you:
Would you write a couple paragraphs on what you thought of
1) the Rocky Mtn 3 gun and give me a link to their website

2)What you thought of the Supersition Mtn Mys. match also. I have their link on the web already.

3) Please include the distance that these two matches use for rifle, I am just trying to plan on what optic selection would be optimal for these matches. I imagine that the ranges would be 100-400 yds or thereabouts.

I really liked your recent review of the MGM Ironman and was planning to go to that one next year.

I shot the SMM3G a couple of years ago. Great match. There is one stage where you shoot a rifle to +/- 300 yards. All else was much closer. I would recommend a 1-4 scope . I used a 1.75 - 6.0 and had some trouble on the close stages.

I missed SMM3G this year (2005), so my experience at that match is limited to 2004.

For large conventional 3Gun matches, I would rank them:

1. RM3G: + terrain (no stages in bays), + logistics, + interesting stages, + prize table. Logistics were good.

2. SMM3G. In 2004, the schedule got backed up due to the two long range rifle stages. Eventually, one was thrown out. In 2004, "speed unloading" resulted in several DQs. (That was allegedly better in 2005.)

3. MGM. Schedule totally screwed up. Stage descriptions, rules, penalties, and procedures varied drastically one RO to the next, or one squad to the next. I would not want to shoot this match and take it seriously. See other comments on stage design in the MGM 2005 thread.

Simply put, if I could only attend one conventional 3Gun match per year, it would be RM3G.

(There is also the Tiger Valley / Cavalry Arms 3Gun match, which was a lot smaller last year than other "big" matches, so I didn't really include it. I would still rate it above MGM, however.)

The ITRC is completely different-- 2 man teams, 2 rifles, 2 pistols, helicopter, HMMV, etc. I highly recommend this match, but it requires more/different "homework" and training.

ETA: optics selection is much debated. If you shoot Tactical/Modifed or Open, you need the capability to shoot at close range out to 300-400 yards (MGM went to 650). Even if you shoot irons (Limited or He-Man), make sure you know your come-ups out that far. For Tac, I prefer the TA11 ACOG, but many use the low power variables (Accupoint, Leupold, Burris) with success.

The most important thing is to practice with your setup on the same target sizes and distances you'll see in the matches.

Because of your recent review of the MGM, it made me think about prioritizing which match to go to first, as money and time are important considerations. I think that I will plan on prioritizing the RM3 gun at the top of my list for next year, and Superstition Mtn looks like a great match to get to also.
