...I took a ride around the dirt roads behind my house this evening about 7pm and saw three groups of deer, 16 in total, all in green fields. In the first bunch of six deer there was one that even without using binocs I could see had a nice rack. With the binocs at about 150 yards he appeared to be a 6 or 8 pointer with a rack about 18 inches high and about 14 wide, all those numbers rough estimates of course.

I thought all the racks would be laying on the ground by now. Have you seen bucks with "horns" this late into the year?

Don't know where you're at but I have seen an eight point in the Ocala Ntl. Forest here in Fla. as late as the end of March..............course I've also seen bucks that were shedding in very early Jan. at the end of our season.

I recall one spike a friend killed that lost one when he shot it(first week in Jan.) and the other came off when he was dragging it out! That was on a game management area and he was really sweating it but did produce the one on checking out with no problem!

Sorry, forgot to say I am in central NC. I know in past years the hunting club I belonged to killed several deer in late Dec that had lost one or both sides of their racks. I am really surprised to see a buck with "horns" this time of year.

This would be way late in the year for my area. For that matter my dad had a little buck in back of his place a couple weeks ago who already had new antlers growing.
