We went out this am and got these hogs, one smaller one about 50lbs, one about 80lbs and the rest topping a 100lbs pretty easy. Six where shot with a rifle by a guy named Randy and the other four the dogs caught or bayed and we shot or stuck, I managed to bleed two of em with my shrade. Calvin pumped buckshot into two of em. So the little orphans get to eat well for the next month or so.

"Pig meat again, somebody please pick-up a damn armadillo or racoon, please...."

Only one really exciting moment, I heard a hog grunt as I was walking down the a creek, Calvin and Dennis on one side me on the other. Butch heard it and one of Calvins dogs and headed towards it but kept coming up dry. I told Calvin, a hog was between us somewhere. So we both head to the creek bank. Suddenly he throws up and shoots and a hog goes to squealing(10yds 000 3" mag buckshot, frontal headshot). Butch bails off the bank and grabs him, he was hiding in some overgrown roots in the water. Well he rolls butch under a couple dozen times and I am figuring it is all over for Butch so I am shucking my radio and stuff, well about this time my pup Thrash comes tearing out of the creek on a tree that fell in and jumps into some vines and hangs up, about five feet off the ground. Butch is trying to drag his half drowned butt out of the water after inhaling a couple gallons. Calvin gets a clear shot and from about 5yds sticks some buck into his head and the show was over, cept he sunk out of sight. He ends up going into fish him out and about the time he gets to where he is at, the dogs bay, right behind me, about 20' in a brushpile. I grab the 30/30 and head that way and about a 120lbs sow is standing there beating the hell out of the dogs. I go to line up a shot and Butch decides he is ok to catch her. He staggers up and tries to grab an ear, misses and she comes right at me, never giving me a clean shot, cause the dogs are all over her. She breaks around the corner and Dennis fires from about 20yds away with a .44mag rifle, he tears a nasty gash down her back, but slows her enough the dogs catch her, and I stuck her. Calvin the whole time is cussing up a storm cause she sounded like she was gonna jump right on top of him.<grins> Ended up she had a nest full of newborns under a tree(about 2lbs), (Edited for content that may be offensive to 99% of the population) Suffice to say they are also deceased.

So for you guys that went to public school and have less than 10 fingers, we killed 10 bigger hogs and 4 confirmed little ones, but probably 8 or so in reality, we just didn't find em after the dogs had fun with them.

If you take offense at the methods employed, i'm sorry it was "For the Children" the little orphanage children that are going to be eating porkchops and sausage for a long time.

Oh and Blain, the hog in front of my left hand, the one with the big patch of hide missing, that is what 000 Remington Buckshot does at 10yds.:neener: In tactical terms it would be called, "Failure to stop.":neener:

St. Gunner,

That is just about the typical preformance we have gotten with buck shot. A totally unreliable killer. Now imagine if that little hog was a big ole pissed off lion. You'd have been the one in the picture with some missing hide.

Don't you just love hog hunting!!!!!!!!!!!:D :D

Hey , I concur great story, great pics ,thanks for sharing!
You guys hunted hard, had fun, got some work left to do in butchering -- but -- what a great example of hunters giving of time and self to provide for others. Not only will you fill some stomachs, you have filled some heads with some invaluable lessons. Lessons that guns are not evil, hunting is part of the natural order of things, and teamwork.

Orphans will see these lessons, contrary to some popular lies spouted today. You guys "done good".

Heck, even learned about buckshot...oops;)

Darn, I knew I should of gotten ahold of ya before I left San Antonio:banghead:

Looks like you had one hell of a good time.

Makes me miss Georgia hog hunting.:(

Posts like these are why I keep signing up for on-campus interviews with companies that have large operations down in Texas, Arizona & New Mexico.

My Aunt and Uncle have a house on a large hill/mountain overlooking Tuscon, I fell in love with the area the second time I was out there (the first time I was only ~9 and only cared about having open access to a swimming pool).

That hog looks dead, mon.

Is that you? I'd wrestle ya. Then I'll show you how a properly set up buck/gun combo takes hogs.

Uh Blain, he is dead, but the buck didn't do it.:D at least not with the first shot. Now see that shiny thing in my hand, that would be a case knife, it is always lethal, when I stick it right through their heart.

Here's my ol' gal from last week.

Hey St. Gunner, do you know a Land family from La Vernia?

Dang...playing with Photoshop instead of MGI to reduce pics...that's one poor quality picture...sorry.

Thumper,

I know James Land, went hunting with him and HIS dogs once a long while ago. That was probably six years ago, at the time he was a quiet man who rarely bragged on what he did.

I deleted a long section right here about somethings....

But to make a really long diatribe about ethics, figurehead status, and such i'll make it short and say.... yes I know the name, but somedays I am not sure I want to admit it...

Not sure what you mean...The man I'm talking about is a fine individual, or was...sorta lost touch over the years. I went to school with his son, Wade, and was lucky enough to spend a lot of time with the family.

And the dogs...He had the smartest hawg dawgs I've ever been around.

Love those hog hunting pics

I always love it when I get to see hog pics here on the hunting forum!!!!

Great fun.

Please, people, post more of those ugly beasts. I wish I had feral hogs to hunt here in western Iowa. Black bear would be neat too.

It seems like there are a lot of different approaches to hog hunting. Some use dogs, others sit and wait while others use archery. A .480 Ruger would also seem like fun. A friend of mine recently bought the 500 S&W .50 caliber revolver. That would do the job on a piggy methinks.

I'd like to try my 8mm Mauser with the really stout S&B hunting loads that have controlled expansion. Or, I'd use Barnes Expander slugs out of my 870 with rifled barrel.

Are the younger sows better eating than the large boars?

Keep posting piggy pics!!!!!!!!!
