Some buddies and I went out this afternoon to hunt some hogs with dogs. I took my A-bolt in .280 along in case anything came by out of shotgun and buckshot range or pistol range. Ended up bagging three of the 10 we shot with the .280, all running at about 300yds in front of witnesses. Took me two shots to get it doped out right windage, lead, and drop, but the last two shots in the mag connected, one to a single pig and the second through a freak of luck caught one in the shoulder and shattered the pelvis on the hog beside him. Some of these hogs where stabbed as the dogs held em, some shot with a .357 rifle, one with a .44 mag, and my 3 with the .280.

Let the Good Times Roll!!Looks like good eating coming up soon.
My cousin has a ranch in texas.Wants me to come down before one of us dies and hunt javelina with handguns.

Ten Bears,

We haven't bought pork in my house for about six years, all wild hog meat. I like the flavor better than domestic. You need to get down here and do that hunt, it is a blast. If he doesn't have hogs on his place, find a place that does and do that to. They are some tough animals to kill and even with a good shot sometimes run for several hundred yards. One of those pigs is hanging outside, the rest went with the other guys, but most of the hogs we shoot we donate to meat market and they butcher it and send it to a series of orphanages and childrens homes. So we don't have to worry about wasting any meat and can shoot and shoot even when our freezers are full. :D

Hey Gunner,
You think like I do.Total enjoyment of the hunt.Total usage of the game bagged.Looks as if everyone had a good time.Kudos to you for thinking about the orphans.I got a soft spot for kids...especially those who have received rough treatment from life.Good job!

naw at 100yds probably would have missed clean.:D Couple weeks ago had a 50yd broadside shot at a pig about 100lbs, went to the prone, squeezed off the round and missed cleaned, think I flinched or something. These I was laying on the ground with a 6-9" harris. The witnesses where plenty quick they beat me to the first hog that was caught by about 150yds or so. But being behind put me that much closer to these hogs when they came out behind us all. :D
See being able to not run as fast as the next guy does have advantages at times.

Have mercy!
That's a huge hog.
And they say a .357mag ain't enough for hogs
And they say a .357mag ain't enough for deer up close
YeeHaw!That's a big'un
Nice going SemperFi83:what:

These are a couple from last summer, posted em here in the rifle forum didn't see the hunting forum till Art moved my other post. The one on the right field dressed 202lbs, the one on the left was like 146 or something.

I shot a bunch of hogs with a .357 when I was hunting with dogs all the time, used to use a 180gr XTP with a hefty dose of W296 under it. At night the muzzle blast was pretty spectacular.

My My! Big pigs ya got in Texas!

Got em in Californistan too = Russian Boar in the Coast Range, and Razorbacks in the Sierra Foothills.
Got an old Boar sow that fed a BBQ of about 50 people.;)
I favor a 30-06, but I know one reserve Police Officer that ambushed one with a .38spl in his .357 = brainshot the beast from the side at bad smell range ( he was downwind):D
Always wanted to make Boar ham, but the carcass don't last long enough for any fancy treatment;)

Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated. I am back, for those who remember me, for those of you who dont even better.lol.
Steve what you have to remember is that not everyone would cram enough 296 in a 357 mag case to do the job.lol. (although we sure stuffed alot into my 44 mag loads.just ask the ol boar josey caught). BTW not that it matters but Dennis and Dennis both bought 44 mag rifles. They just sound like .357s cause they buy that factory ammo.lol Now dont anyone jump on the new guy im not bashing 357 i have one myself, but i wouldnt shoot St. gunners handloads in it . Happy hunting all.

50-fella BBQ:

Well you have to make a broth from the bones after you toast them a bit to make the Pinto Beans!

;)
