First off, some background. I am first generation gun owner. NO ONE in the family but me owns gun or feels the need to.

Second, I picked up a nice Norinco. It really looks very new cosidering it's age, well loved and just looks like it makes antis have fits because of the evil black folding stock and bayonet.

So here is where I want your input and not just the standard do a search response.

Pretend for minute that your wallet is only so deep, You can buy a new lower end AR or a used upper middle end AR for around 650 dollars or...

A "new" (read as EXCELLENT) Yugo AK with all black syntheric furniture or...

A couple more SKS and put them in your favorite flavor i.e. stock choice, Duracoat?, country of origin etc...

thanks for your time

Personally, I'd buy the complete AR.

Why?

Well, I already have an SKS and I don't really want an AK. :)

I think it's really a personal preference thing. While I have an AK, and I like it, I like ARs a bit more. You seem to wax a little more ecstatic about the AK than the unnamed ARs. Do you already have (an) AR(s)?

Nope, don't own an AR. I want to buy a "battle" rifle and it pretty much comes down the above choices. I do not the option of try before you buy and I do not know anyone who owns these type of guns. so, I have ZERO experience with the AR or AK.

I know lots of folks own both and I was wondering what their first choice is as far as beig limited to the budget of one or the other because I may not be able to buy a "battle" by the time I have the cash for the other choice that wasn't purchased the first time.

Ammo is plentiful for both formats. Cost is close, so just looking for feedback.

AR all the way. Although AK's are also fun to shoot, AR's are way more accurate, which equates to more fun IMO. Get the AR, and save up for the toys you can add to it.

Oh, and get the used upper-middle if its in good condition.

I do not the option of try before you buy and I do not know anyone who owns these type of guns.

Have you headed down to the local rifle range? Around here if I sit on the firing line for two-three hours, I'll see both ARs and AKs (not counting my own) and most people are very generous about offering to let you try a few rounds. Generally I'll break the ice with "Is that an XXXX?" and then we talk rifles. I offer to let them shoot mine as well if they like.

Also, a lot of ranges will rent firearms. Have you tried that option? Both AKs and ARs are good rifles; I'd try to get hands on with both and go with what you prefer.

My personal vote would be to go with the AK. More reliable, and you have to worry about it far less if you skip cleaning day (or in my case, a couple :uhoh: :) ), and you have to spend a lot less money on it to "make it yours"--somehow, they all seem perfect for me when I bought them, and I"d wind up customizing the living crap out of an AR. YMMV--

And I feel you on the "first generation" thing. So was I--and now I'm starting to convert my dad! I"m the first shooter in 3 generations, and it's always good to get other family members into it; just keep kindly offering, and don't be pushy, and you may have some luck. Nowadays, I think I've gotten my dad to consider buying "something of his own", rather than always using mine.....:D

I don't like buying anything used if I can help it. Unless you can get a real good look over before you buy.

Do what Mr. Roberts said and hang out at a range to get an idea of what is what.
