Too hot to shoot

i'm not gonna lie. i shoot early in the morning and on weekends when im working on a load or what have you. I shoot out of the pickup with it running and a/c on. i have my own private range though, so that helps. the mirror on the door can be a dang good rest too!! also a good time to practice night time shooting for SD situations.

I have shot when it was too cold to load mags. I've shot when it was so hot I couldn't wipe sweat from my eyes fast enough to get a shot off...well almost. Not my favorite kind of temps. I'll shoot in either extreme of temp but I'd rather shoot in the "comfort zone" like most of us. :D

My wife makes fun of me when I'm griping about the heat while loading gear to head to the range.

When its time to shoot...its time to shoot, don't look at the temp!

What do you folks do when it's too hot to go to the range?

I wised up after 15 years and moved out of the South. When I still lived in Alabama I went to the range first thing in the morning and was done by 8-9am. That took care of the heat but made the humidity worse.

There's no such thing as bad weather, just poor clothing choices.

(or so I'm told)

I've shot in conditions as cold as -22F, and as warm as 105F. I prefer to shoot when it's between 45-80F. I'll usually go to the range if it's between 20-95F these days.

"Too hot to shoot" means I have to let my rifle cool down after a long string....;)
This was my thought when I saw the thread title.

Going out this weekend with some buddies for some range time. Only supposed to be in the 70's or low 80's, but we've had some rain lately which is going to ramp up the humidity. Dress appropriately and stay hydrated and wear shooting gloves.

It's always hot in the summer here, heat index over 100 just about every day
Dont you just love it? Like the wind chill in winter, the media couldnt stand not having something in summer, so they can dramatize things, and make it feel hotter than it really is.

Pretty much. That, and attitude.

Another one from Texas here. If I didn't shoot when it was above 90 outside the my guns would be put up about 7 months out of 12!

My range installed outdoor ceiling fans on a timer to the cover over the firing line. Really helps in the hot weather. And I bring a Yeti cup of ice & water.

Deep south brother here, and while SC aint Afghan hot the humidity can be a bear at time.

I shoot IDPA matches all summer, and in those bays you can add like 5-10 degrees. 97-100 degrees plus heat index? Yup, just gotta hydrate.

I deer hunt in September when its 90 plus and muggy, shorts, thermacell, camo tshirt and snake boots, you do what you gotta do.

Do it cause you enjoy it, I would probably do it in -10 degree weather, thank god I dont have too.

Down here the temps get up to 116-120, but it is a "dry heat", usually in the early morning hours (5:00 AM-6:00AM) the temps get down to the low 90's, however lately, by 7:30-8:00AM they are up to 105. Needless to say when I do go shooting it is usually for just about 2 hours in the early morning. I do bring a lot of liquids in my ice chest, but hot is hot, and I don't enjoy being over-heated.

Man-up, bring water or Gatorade, and go shoot.

Get your A off that couch, put the Bon-Bons away, turn Oprah off, grab your rifle and gear, and get out to the range. And don't wuss-out shooting off a comfy bench under the cool shade of an overhang. You dude-skis need to practice shooting from improvised field positions out in the hot sun and incorporate movement.

Real deal marksmanship-skills take work. So do the frickin' work.

You think ISIS recruits are worrying about the *hot* weather in the Middle East? C'mon, let's get serious.

I do it with several rifles each month, most recently my CMP HRA .308 M1.

Here's a link to a YouTube vid of a Rifles Only dude-ski working a .308 M1 with tactical movement, ... in the allegedly *hot* Texas heat ...

Word.

TX - 100 deg matches.

1. Lot of good hydration liquid.
2. Shade
3. Hot weather clothing
4. Bug repellent and lots of sun screen
5. Hat!!!

At 110 - nope, staying home.

I've seen folks do the heat stress crisis - not pretty.

Call me crazy but I shoot in any and all condition(s) be it hot or cold, day or night, wind or no wind, rain or no rain etc.

Ranges, heat ...

My metro area has extreme heat & humidity this summer, :( .
We had a few our highest summer temps since 1998.
That's hot.
We also have thunder storms & heavy rain which makes you feel like someone is choking you with a wet towel when it finally stops.

I rarely shoot outdoors. The local clubs are expensive and the public ranges are all 40-90min away. Plus they have range cadre/rules/blah blah blah... .

I'm fortunate to have a great clean, well managed simulator range or 270 degree VR/DV system to shoot in cold A/C :D .

They have a newer live fire range too but that place draws a lot of YUPPIES & casual shooters who have the time-$$$ to crank off a few 100 .454 rounds or .480Ruger out of their custom SA revolvers or they fire up the .50AE Desert Eagles.

Wow, ...

... cushy is as cushy does.

Just remember, ISIS jihadis aren't training in air-conditioned rooms, don't O.D. every day on pizza and bob-bons, and they can get live-fire experience pretty much whenever they want.

Word up for the wise ... :scrutiny:

Just sayin' ...

Uh yeah ....

Your right, ;) .
But I've been off active duty since about 1993 or so, .
I'm not going around waxing Tangos or chasing bad guys in 100 degree heat.

That's a young man's game. :D

Took a carbine class in the aftermath of a violent thunderstorm and tornado.

I was driving up to it, about 120 miles from home and weather was vile. I kept calling the range and they said it was nice. That was because the storm was moving ahead of me in that direction.

On one part of the highway, there was torn up stuff - sheet metal roofs. Stupid me kept going - I saw a guy standing by a drainage ditch waving his arms as his pick up was sailing down the water into a culvert that the truck didn't fit.

Saw another truck - roads covered with water. Stupid me - my Honda made it for a fun day in the cold rain.

In my younger years, I was like a baseball pitcher; I shot better when well warmed up and sweating. Summer was home. Cold and damp were my enemies.

Nowadays, not so much. But I will put up with a hot day to get to shoot. The club has access to the police range this afternoon and I will be there.

I try to shoot every weekend. However, I also have more than five acres to mow and maintain. My summers are usually busy with yard upkeep and now I have to help with my mother-in-laws yard too. By the time I get around to it it's usually middle of the afternoon and as hot as it's going to get for the day. I still shoot though. I hope it just makes me tough. I also have to skip the reloading too because my reloading equipment is in the shop out back with no air conditioning or fans right now. I had an attic fan but it's out of order. I've got to get that thing fixed!
