A guy I work around aproached me a couple of weeks ago about getting into clay target shooting. He wanted to get into a sport that he and his son could do together instead of him setting in the bleachers being a spectator. I pointed him in the right direction as I new of a guy that had a Beretta A391 Parallel Target shotgun for sale for $450.00 , yea I know if I would of had the money I would of had it right now. His boy is 12 and a pretty good athlete but needed a shorter gun.
Well I had an 1100 stock that I needed to cut down for my kids about 8 years from now but I went ahead and cut about 2" off and put a Decelerator on it so its about 1 3/8 shorter than normal and it fit on my 11-87. He wanted to stay with 12 ga and light loads but needed something for his boy to shoot as the Beretta was a bit long.
I went to the club a bit early today to shoot a couple of rounds before I said that I would meet them. Had one of those days the planets lined up and shot a straight 50 in the wind.
My friend and his boy showed up right on time and we went through the safety routine and got down to shooting. I started them out on low seven station and took it real slow and they were breaking the targets consistantly. They each shot 25 from station seven lows and a few highs and got about 16 or 17 each. We took a little break and went down to station 1 and shot half a box each there and broke over half the targets from both high and low houses. I was coaching them on gun stance and technique a little at a time so they could get the feel. They split another box of shells on station 2 and broke over half of these targets as well.
They were very happy, a little tired and wanting to shoot some more, but I could tell it was enough and advised them to take it slow. I let them borrow the cut down 11-87 and told them about the drill that sm recommends about mounting a gun repetitively so they would get used to the feel and they said they would give it a try.
I believe they have found a sport they can enjoy together.
