I took my armalite eagle arms 16" carbine to the range today (as well as the ak) to run some shots down the lane. All shots were on open sights with the stock A2 sights via a removable carry handle. Well at 50 yards I put up a very very tight group of 2" with around 27 shots shots with a few shots straying out to make it a sub 3" group total over the 30 shots fired. Well I then went to 100 yards and at 100 it seems the front sight post is too thick for me to judge correctly center of target. I ended up shooting 3 MOA with the exception of one shot which put it at a total of 4 MOA at the 100 yard line after firing 10 shots. My question is.....do they make a front sight post that is thinner than the A2 post without having to change the entire front sight block? Ill add some pics of the targets.

Brett

BTW when referring to shooting is it sights or sites.......I am clustered everytime I type it.

First target is 50 yards 30 shots.

Get some optics and those groups will tighten up a lot.

Thats not bad shooting with open sights.

How about these at www.brownells.com :
923-000-038 AR-15 Front Sight Pack $32.00

Seven, A-2-style, front posts let you choose the sight that best fits your hunting and target shooting requirements. Each post has a distinctly different profile that provides just the right sight picture to improve sighting and accuracy. Tapered, round post with .072" (1.8mm) ball top, tapered post with .052" (1.3mm) ball top, tapered post with .034" (.87mm) ball top, square post with .072" (1.8mm) square top, square post with .052" (1.3mm), square top, square post with .034" (.87mm), square top, two-way, .072" wide, square post with v-notch top and inverted v (point up) top.

These might help too:
565-016-000 Quick-Change Apertures Fit Standard A2 Sights $20.00

Change your rear aperture to any one of three, match diameters in only seconds. National Match size apertures slip inside the A-2 standard issue, 0-200 rear aperture, and are held in place with a rubber, "O" ring retainer. Apertures feature convenient notches for fast identification.

SPECS: Steel, blue. Set includes .046" (1.1mm), .052" (1.3mm), .059" (1.4mm) diameter apertures, 6 O-rings.

I have to dissent on Cableman's suggestion of optics. Just fine tune the front sight post to the size of the target and practice practice practice. So far looks pretty good. More time will get those to shrink, with ease. Even with irons you should be able to do 1.5 MOA or better off of a bench. (If I can do it, anybody can learn how, and it does depend on the rifle/load combo.)

FWIW, when refering to aiming systems it is sights. At least, I'm pretty sure it is sights!

Take care,
~Nate

The nice thing about ARs is that if you need an accessory or a modufication of any kind its a pretty safe bet that someone out there makes EXACTLY what you want.

DPMS also makes a whole range of front sight posts,. including one designed to give you the same sight picture as a 20" on a 16" carbine.

TA11f ACOG is on the way, but I would like to perfect this iron sight shooting. I am use to an AK style of sight as thats what ALL rifles I have owned have. I am sure I will get better with the irons, as I am willing to put the practice into it since the ACOG is not ideal for close quick shooting. far as the sight posts go the sight post that is at 2 o'clock is probably what I will be looking at....possibly the one at 10 o'clock. Thanks for the link. I am still displeased with the shooting though lol.

I sell Trijicon at 10% over wholesale

Drop me an e-mail if you want another scope in the future. I bet you paid way too much, my friend, although they are very high quality. Trijicon has been trying to run discount retailers out of the Trijicon business.. they threatened me with a lawsuit for selling at my prices..

Well I then went to 100 yards and at 100 it seems the front sight post is too thick for me to judge correctly center of target.

Try using some orange target dots they can help by providing some contrast.

I also make sure I approach the target exactly the same way every time with my sights. When shooting a black or dark target, try placing your front sight post on the target by approaching from the left or the right and "splitting" the target in half. Then when you feel you are centered squeeze off the shot. Doing this consistently will help your groupings.

Different sight posts can help, but you are still dealing with a "black on black" problem.

Good Shooting

Good job!

I recommend you learn to shoot very well with the iron sights BEFORE getting an optic.

Optics are nice and have their place, but IMHO we rely on them to much.

Have you ever seen an optic on any of the world champoin AR shooters guns? You won't.

This is a target that was at 600 yards shot at with open sights. 23 of 40 shots fired are in this 3 INCH circle. The other 17 shots were very close to this spot.

It can be done.

I knew David Tubb was an excellent shot but for a .223 at 600 yards that's terrific!

Frankly I think that is pretty good shooting with iron sights off hand with a new rifle. Combat accurate. The enemy you are shooting at would be dead dead dead! That's what counts.

Keep practicing with your iron sights. I think you will find after time that you can shoot 3' to 2" groups at 100 yards in good light. What more do you need?

The AR-15 is a very accurate rifle.

That's better shooting than I was able to do on my first trip to the range with my new AR. Practice, practice, practice... especially concentrating on your cheekweld (repeatable cheek position is VERY important), stance, and sight picture (try 6 o'clock hold). After a few hundred rounds downrange (live) and many more at home (dryfire), you'll be shooting 1" at 50yds and <3" at 100yds all day long. Get some good ammo and some more practice (maybe one of those nifty target front sights) and you'll see your groups shrinking even more!
